FYI Something i heard on the news tonight
On channel 11 news has a thing that they call fact finders and the one that they were talking about tonight really scared me!!! and i had no idea that this happens... its regarding infant deaths... how 1 in 141 babies die in the united states each year b/c they are misdiagnosed by doctors
her is the
Video clip
and the website for more information
R Baby Foundation
pretty scary i didnt know that not every ER is equip with a pediatric trained physician 24/7 and that we should call our local ER and ask if they have a PEDS or a pediatric trained physician 24/07 if we need to find out which hospital does around the area that we live in a make a note

I agree w/this 100%. We will only take Ryan to the ER at one particular hospital (which unfortunately he's been at twice already) because they have an outstanding pediatric ICU staff who are on call for the ER. It's a good 15-20 min drive, and there's another hospital like 5 min from us but I refuse to take him there when they don't have any ped specialists at all. The exception to this would be if he had an immediate life threatening issue like choking or something.

Re: FYI Something i heard on the news tonight
I read this article and the stories from the parents, and although its heartbreaking for anyone to lose thier child, a lot of it I can't see happening in this day and age, especially in a modern place like NY
All of the major hospitals on LI have seperate peds ER's with peds trained ER doctors. Winthrop, LIJ/Schneiders, NCMC, Stonybrook. As far as I know only the smaller hospitals don't but there are so many to name, I can't tell you which ones do and which ones don't but I do know Mercy does not because I worked there for a little while. In NYC I think almost all the hospitals do as well, including the ER I work in.
Some of the cases on this website were very young infants who IMO if they presented with those symptoms to the ER they would def be admitted for observation at the very least. I also can't imagine that the one parent called the peds doctor in the office and described a 3 week old pale child who is lethargic, not eating and breathing rapidly and the doc telling the parents not to bring the child to the hospital. Something doesn't seem right. All of those things are huge red flags, and the parents who wrote this article sound more like they were coached by some lawyer to say that they told the doctor that in order to win thier lawsuit
The other story with the 2 week old girl who was premature, couldnt breathe and was repeatedly discharged from the hospital?? That seems ludicrous to me, and I can't see that ever happening in this day and age. I have never seen them send home a 2 week old with diff breathing for any reason. 2 week old babies don't just get brushed off with a common cold and sent home. Something not right here either.
I don't know, I just hate reading these types of things, they scare parents half to death. You can't live your life in fear. This is a free country, if you feel your child is sick you have every right to seek treatment at a hospital and bring yourself peace of mind. If the child really is sick than you have the treatment you need. If they are not that sick, than at least you know that he/she is OK.
I am more concerned that pertussis and now measles are going around. Think about it this way, there was one baby who had pertussis and he exposed at least 10 of us. Nobody got sick, but we were all out and placed on antibiotics as a precaution. Think about all the people out there who don't know they were exposed and are spreading it to unvaccinated children. I think that is something to worry about more than the things happening on the website above.
Keep informed, but just take these type of websites with a grain of salt
