Gained 10 lbs in 6 weeks...feeling blue

I had a midwife appt today and it seems that the 5 weeks I went without any weight gain were made up for with 10 lbs in the last 6 weeks. Since I never knew what I gained in the first trimester, I will estimate it was 3-5 lbs which brings me to about 15 lbs gained at 23.5 weeks. The midwife didn't say anything about it. She said everything is normal but I just want it to slow down.

I know it isn't that important how much I gain (within reason) but I thought I was doing better than this.

I just feel down right now.Chat Icon

I had the same gain at 23 weeks and was up 17 pounds. That is actually really good- don't be down.

At 28 wks, I am up an additional 4 pounds. So don't worry- all is good.

Thanks for the support. I guess I had set unrealistic goals for myself and I need to realize that if the midwives are not complaining, things must be okay.

I have been exercising and not eating a lot (if anything, I have been eating less). I was hoping the number might have been 6-7 lbs not 10Chat Icon

It is probably just the amount in that period of time that is making you feel blue. Don't worry at your stage I was about the same. Now, I am up 20 at almost 30 weeks and have nicknamed myself "fat mama." You're doing just fine!

I was not gaining a lot in the beginning and then at one doctor's appointment (around the 5-6 month mark), I suddently gained almost 10 pounds in one month and had gained a total of 25 pounds! I was devastated! Then it started to even out again. I am 36 weeks now and have only gained 35 pounds total.

That's not bad at all. It's a totally normal amount to gain, especially during the second trimester when you gain most of your weight.

if it is 10 lbs then that is what the baby needs - dont worry about the weight now, its unhealthy not to gain what your body needs - worry about it after the baby is born!

Pregnancy is not the time to obsess about your weight at all.

If you are continuing to exercise and are eating healthy, you will be FINE.

You're doing fine! I'm up 35 lbs at 33 weeks and my doctor doesn't seem concerned.

Just make sure you aren't not eating because you are afraid of gaining weight. You need to eat and putting on weight is all a part of being pregnant. Your baby needs nutrition, now is not the time to diet and worry. Just eat healthy!!

Re: Gained 10 lbs in 6 weeks...feeling blue

if you are 23.5 weeks and gained that 10 in the last 6 weeks, I really wouldn't worry. The baby has a huge growth spurt then, and so do you. Remember that it's all for a good reason. If you had gained like 40lbs in 23 weeks, I'd be nervous, but you are well within the norm. You need to take care of that bean and the extra is your body making a warm, cozy home for babyChat Icon
