Gap Kids Return Policy - Have You Heard Of This?
I was in the store at Smithaven Mall last week and a man was trying to return some items with his daughters that they received as gifts (wrong colors or something) and he had a gift RECEIPT. The two girls were telling him that he would only get store credit for the CURRENT SELLING PRICE. So as I was paying, I asked if she was sure that was their policy WITH A RECEIPT and if I returned what I was purchasing today, would I only get the price it sells for on the day I return it, and she said yes!! I couldn't believe it! I mean, I really think 100% they were wrong, both of them. Anyone else heard of this?

I have never heard this. I have however heard of them not taking back items that they no longer carry regardless of having a reciept, or offering what the last sale price was for a gift card (which is usually very little).

That doesn't sound right at all.
Than what's the point of the gift receipt? I always thought it was so you would get the credit for what you paid.

Never heard of that either. The girls had picked out the colors they wanted or the right size so it wasn't about them not having it in the store anymore.

They are TOTALLY wrong. I hope that man didn't return it and went to another store.
Here is what it said on their website:
"Did you get a gift that's the wrong size or color? You can send it back to us and receive a merchandise exchange or an Options gift card for the original price paid, as stated on the gift receipt or invoice. Our Options gift cards may be redeemed by any customer and used in-store and online at Gap, Old Navy, and Banana Republic and online at piperlime.com."

I am really shocked then. I have never had a bad return experience there.

Makes no sense whatsoever.
ETS: Seeing littlejoy's post. They are definitely wrong! Hopefully the man didn't get shafted with his return.

The entire point of a gift receipt is so that you get the amount back that the person paid originally. It's another story if you go without a receipt - then they would be right. But they were totally wrong. I had a problem with the Gap a few years ago with a return and I wrote a letter to the company and they sent me a $10 gift card...this guy should definitely complain.

Don't even get me started on the issues we have had with returns at the Gap. Apparently, the store managers have a lot of discretion. However, when we complained, we got gift cards.

i think its ridiculous, but i guess, theyd lose alot of money if constant returners kept this up...theyre only able to resell at the sale price..

True, that does make sense. Many stores have the same policy-- after 90 days (or sometimes even 60), you can't return with the receipt, period. Then you can try to return w/o the receipt, and you get what the current lowest price is. It does make sense then.

that does not make any sense AT ALL!!
the only thing i can think of is that the person who bought the gift went back and got a price adjustment...
i was told at the GAP that if you get a price adjustment after you give a gift and the person returns it, it will show up as the price adjustment price...

Nah..that's not what they were telling him or me for that matter. They were just wrong, so I wouldn't expect what I posted to be a policy in any of their stores.

Right, but I don't think the guy was returning after 90 days since the items were still on the floor and Gap doesn't usually have stuff for that long. Not to mention she told me if I had to return my item I would get the sale price, even if I had the receipt. Nothing about 90 days. Apparently that manager needs to train her employees

I've never heard of that policy. Since gift receipts don't have prices on them though, I would think most places give you the current "sale" price in thinking how would you be the wiser without the receipt with prices on it. I'd really rather give someone the real gift receipt so I know they at least get the price I paid if they need to return it.
