Garden City or Manhasset?

DH and I are in the very early stages of looking for a new home and likely will be making the move to the suburbs!

The 2 areas we are most interested in are Manhasset and Garden City. Having grown up in Nassau County, I am familiar with both. However, I was looking for any feedback anyone has on either area - especially if you live there or have lived there or have friends/family who live there.

Pros? Cons? Do you prefer one over the other?

Re: Garden City or Manhasset?

My DH lived in Manhasset for a while and I loved it there. I would live there if I could afford it. Great commute to the city, nice town area and very, very little crime. The schools are extremely highly rated. I don't know much about Garden City, but Manhasset is defintely a nice place to live.

Re: Garden City or Manhasset?

They are both lovely its a hard choice

I know that garden city has their own everything, police, fire, water, parks, street, recreation departments. The grounds are kept up very well, there are a lot of parks and a lot of sports as well. The people in garden city love their tennis and sports, they have a radiant heated tennis court too, they have a really nice community pool too.

Re: Garden City or Manhasset?

DHs cousins live in Manhasset (munsey park) and love it. Great schools, library and friends. and it's close to all parkways, etc. I hate driving around there though- the roads there get very crowded...

Re: Garden City or Manhasset?

I work in Garden City and live in East Hills (right next to Manhasset). My choice would be Manhasset b/c it is close to Northern State and the LIE so it's convenient to get anywhere you want in 15 minutes or less and the train line is very good. re: garden city--although it is a BEAUTIFUL area and the homes are absolutely gorgeous, I would be a little hesitant to buy a home there just because of the surrounding areas. Also, I love the North Shore Chat Icon

Re: Garden City or Manhasset?

ITA both are great towns, Manhasset is on the Port Washington LIRR line which is super quick into the city.

Re: Garden City or Manhasset?

I prefer Garden City's incorporated village amenities, police, sanitation, gorgeous swim club/pool, exclusive schools, etc. I also like the location in that it is close to the mall, restaurants, shopping, etc. I find it has a much more community feel than Manhasset.

I would choose Manhasset. When DH I dream talkChat Icon we say we would never live in Garden City because you can't have your own pool, basketball net and I am sure there are other things. Not having a pool is a big deal for us inthe future. A community pool would not cut it for us.

ITA and for the same reasons. I have friends who live in both places and from what I've been able to gather the Manhasset vibe is a little bit more "Wall Street". Though I wonder how that's working these days Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Garden City or Manhasset?

I love both places, but if I had to choose I would want to live in Garden City. You are close to the major roads, the mall, any store you can dream of and are very safe in that neighborhood. It's a tight-knit community in the sense that the kids have lots of extracurricular activities to join in together and so do their parents! Manhasset is more secluded to me and all the way North of all the the above listed amenities. I also like that you are somewhat closer to your neighbors in GC. I was never a fan of a huge gap between houses. I think now as a married lady and wouldn't want my kids going down the longest front lawn ever, and next door to play and NOT be able to see them. HTH

Re: Garden City or Manhasset?

I live in Manhasset so clearly that is my preference.

For those that said you feel GC has more of a community - Manhasset has such an incredible sense of community it is unbelievable. There are so many wonderful community based organizations including a Mother's Group that holds numerous events, organizes playgroups etc. I can't compare to GC because I have no idea what the sense of community is like there but I can speak for Manhasset and it is excellent.

Also, we have the Americana which in my opinion is much more desirable that Roosevelt Field. We have great restaurants, excellent schools, a brand new library.... We don;t have great parks in manhasset, but there are great parks nearbly with pools & golf (Christopher Morley).

We also have a much better commute to NYC and we are closer to the LIE.

They are both great places to live but I would choose Manhasset over GC any day.

Oh and there are a lot of Wall Street professionals in Manhasset. I am sure there is a similar % in GC. Anywhere in Nassau where there is wealth there are going to be some Wall Street Professionals.
