Gas - what is normal and what's not?
Joseph has been a fussy, cranky, unhappy baby for the last week or so. I've chalked it off to teething since he drools like a hydrant and only wants his fist in his mouth. But, his gas has become very bad in the last day or 2. And they SMELL! He cries and cries and then he'll fart forcefully and then he whines. And he's burping like crazy. He's been on cereal since 12 weeks old, he's 16.4 weeks now, so I'm not sure if that's it or if it's my breast milk which I haven't really changed my diet. He loves eating from the spoon but is very fussy at my breast lately (during the day, not at night) but he will take a bottle fine. I spoke w/ the pedi and they said I could take him to a gastroenterologist, but I'm not sure if this is just normal gas and it's just his teeth bothering him??? The mylicon doesn't work anymore. I don't know what to do.

Re: Gas - what is normal and what's not?
Well it's normal for the farts to be stinky by now. But I don't know how normal it is for him to be burping all the time if he's not eating. If you haven't changed anything in your diet, I would try changing cereals (what are you giving him - rice or oatmeal?) if the ped says it's okay to. Or better yet, just back off the cereal for a day or two to see if it has anything to do with it before changing it.
ETA: Is he still pooping normally?

thx - he's on oatmeal. His poop went from 4-5x/day to 1x every other day or so. I could take him off the cereal - he has it 2x/day and see, but he loves it...Maybe I won't give it to him tonight and see what happens

I don't know about the gas, but it's normal for them to poop less as they eat more. I don't understand why, but I called my dr in a panic thinking she was constipated and they said it's totally normal.
I hope he feels better soon!

Hmm....then it doesn't seem like he's constipated (unless the poops are hard and formed) which was what I thought it might be.
It's totally up to you. Don't do it if you don't think it may be contributing to the problem. For me, it was contributing to Jake's constipation so I tried that and he immediately showed signs of improvement so then I knew what my next move was. Since you said he seemed to be straining and then gas came out, it sounded to me like he might be constipated and cereal can be binding so that's why I suggested it.
Good luck!!

OMG, I SO could have written this post! Our babies are identical, I swear! The last week or so Alex's gas has been unbearable! She usually has gas, but OMG, it has stepped up a few notches. She now will cry and cry and it seems as if it's painful for her to get it out. She'll fuss on the boob and wake up during naps and from nighttime sleep because it's bothering her soooo much. And, dare I say, they are the stinkiest things in the world! I have a pediatrician appointment tomorrow and I'm going to discuss with him... I'll let you know what he says!

same here and his burps smell too. The gas is so bad that he cries at night I pick him up and he farts up a storm and then goes back to sleep. Maybe it is the cereal. Are you fedding him anyhting else?

He's on cereal and fruit. He's DEFINITELY not constipated - when this boy goes he FILLS the diaper with goo
Beth - let me know what your pedi says...mine's not too big a help. And, yes, these 2 are soulmates
Sandra - when you took him off the cereal, did you ever put him back on it? He loves it - I really don't want to take it away

Re: Gas - what is normal and what's not?
Have you tried giving him an ounce of cammomile tea once a day???? Jack has HORRIBLE gas and my ped said to give that to him - it is supposed to help with gas and digestive issues.
Just make it like a regular cup of tea and let it cool to room temperature. Jack loves it - he ***** it down like crazy!!!!
