Gas Fireplaces
We are considering adding one - we do not have a fireplace at all currently. How do gas fireplaces vent to the outside? (we have a chimney, but on the opposite side of the house..)
Has anyone added a gas fireplace? Any recommendations for who does this? Idea on cost?
TIA!
Thinking of something like this

Re: Gas Fireplaces
If you have gas heat already it will be significantly less. If you don't they have to have a line come from the street to your house which is $$$$$$$$.

Re: Gas Fireplaces
I have a gas fireplace. It was originally wood burning but was converted before I bought my house so I couldn't tell you who installed it. It is ventless with an auto shutoff. I love it because it heats up the entire living area and the kitchen (I have an open floor plan) so I keep my thermostat low and my heating bill in the winter is not bad at all which is a great advantage to having one.

We have gas in the house, but not the heat. That's yet another project on our list.. we hope to convert the heat to gas and get rid of the oil burner & tank.

That's great, I'd love to be able to use it for help heating the house. So no vent?

Yes, no vent. I have had it repaired once and used L & R Fireplace in Oceanside. They have gas fireplaces if you want to check them out. I am actually thinking of upgrading mine and will be using them.

Re: Gas Fireplaces
We had a propane fireplace in our appartment that last year my in laws converted to a wood burning stove.. the regular fireplace didnt heat the house everything just went up the chimney..This burns the wood very slowly it burns for hours..We love it! We never had to turn our heat on last winter.... This company came and basically put this cast iron insert into the fireplace and I believe you get a tax rebate for it. And in my Inlaws house they didnt have a fireplace so they just got a wood burning stove. They said last year they saved lots of money. It looks similar to this one..but there are many different styles to choose from.
ETA..My inlaws put something similar like this in the corner of their house with the wood burning stove of course on it.

Re: Gas Fireplaces
we added a direct vent gas fireplace when we redid our house- we did not have one there - iit does not need a chimmney - it just must be on an extrerior wall and has an exterior compartemtn about 4 ft by 8ft hight by maybe 1.5-2ft deep - it just has siding over it - and small vent location that has a cover nicer then a drywer
it puts off a lot of heat and looks very nice
eta - our runs off natural gas - we converted during our construction -we putin the heat and glo escape - we got it from basic energy firplace in huntington but they also have a location in mineola

I'm not sure. You'll have to find out from a plumber. I would think not since you have gas already. We currently have gas heat and our plumber told us to convert our wood burning fireplace to gas would be about $200-$300.
My ILs converted from oil to gas and it was a few thousand dollars (a few years ago). They already had gas coming to their house too.

Re: Gas Fireplaces
The cost also depends on how many feet of pipe/how far the plumber needs to run the gas over to the new fireplace.

I think you're ahead of the game if you already have a line coming into the house supplying the gas. Probably just have to connect or add a line to the fireplace.

Right. I believe the cost would be for materials and labor more than anything.

Re: Gas Fireplaces
We have a gas fireplace. It is vented outside. It is up against the wall and the vent (some metal thingy) sticks out. Looks sort of like a fan from the outside. I dont know the answer to your other ? about the gas line though. We have gas heat and cooking and the fireplace was also here when we bought the house.
