Gas heat
We looked at a home that has gas heat and we really like it. But - their gas bills seem to be extremely high. My current house is about half the size and we have oil heat. Our boiler is 175k btu and the gas burner/boiler (not sure what you call it) is only 110k btu. Could that be too small for the house? It also has three zone heat. Does anyone know anything about gas heat? Or should I expect such high bills if we buy the house? Thanks!

Re: Gas heat
I think gas and oil are about the same cost wise... did you ask them what temp they keep their house at in the winter? it could be higher than what you would want.

Re: Gas heat
I did ask them but my DH always keeps the heat way up so we'd probably be about the same temp. The boiler just sounds too small for the house.

Re: Gas heat
I'm not sure exactly how they compare, but I can tell you that my mother's gas bill this past winter was way higher than my oil bill. She averaged about $400/month as opposed to my $250. But, we do live in different areas of LI and she is on a cement slab and I have a crawlspace basement and attic, which may affect the usage.
