Technically you can. I mean if you're stranded somewhere and there's nothing but regular, it's fine. But it's usually not recommended to use regular for a long time. You may start hearing engine noises.

Re: Gas question for my car
when we bought our VW they said you can put regular in and if you notice a difference occassionally add preium of even buy the addatives they sell in the auto stores.
eta: we lease, so don't care too much with wear on engine

Re: Gas question for my car
If it says to ONLY use Premium I would only use premium.
Using a lower octane can cause knocking issues.
There are cars that say using a lower octane can decrease performance. I think that's different than a car saying you MUST use premium.
I wouldn't chance it. Use premium.

ITA.
It's the same on the flip side. People that use premium to "treat" their car when the manufacturer recommends regular are just wasting their money. Use the gas that is recommended for your car.

Re: Gas question for my car
Higher Preformance engines such as engines that come in higher end cars and/or sports cars need a higher octaine gas..Don't put regular in ..its not good for your engine.

It often costs more by buying cheaper gas.... per gallon, lower octane is cheaper, but you get worse gas mileage, so you end up spending more overall to go the same distance. Plus, you risk damaging the engine, which isn't cheap to repair. I would stick with what the manufacturer suggests.

I have a 2006 Murano and the manual says you can use regular gas, your mileage will suffer but no knocking or bad performance. I only use regular. If your vehicle is designed to use a higher octane it will not run properly with regular.

Re: Gas question for my car
Our VW calls for premium and we always put regular now w/ these gas prices. Its insane. We haven't noticed a difference in 2 years.

Re: Gas question for my car
My lease is up soon so I switched to regular gas. I am not wasting another dime on premium gas.
