Gavin Cobalt Rocked Our World on April 7 at 1:52 am!

I posted on Saturday, April 5 with pictures of me at 41 weeks. Here is my post: http://www.lifamilies.com/chat/topic.aspx?ID=273095

After I posted I started to feel kinda crampy. I didn’t say anything to Phil that night, but when we went to bed, I fell asleep and was snoring up a storm, so Phil woke me up. I woke up at around 3 am or so with I think a contraction. I went downstairs and slept on the couch.

Phil woke me up around 8 am or so and I said to him, I think today is the day. We got up, got dressed and went and got bagels. We came back with bagels and ate them.

Phil wanted to go to the Eddie Bauer in the outlets to get some new clothes and I wanted some new socks. So I told him to go. Right when he walked out the door, my water broke. But he came back in because he forgot something and saw the look on my face and I told him, “I think my water broke.” He was like okay lets go to the hospital. I said no, go to the outlets, I will be fine.

I wanted to shower, plus I still wasn’t sure. So he went and I showered. He was home with new clothes within an hour or so. He bought new shirts, jeans, a Guiness hat, boxers and shoes. So cute!!!!

He showered and got dressed and put our bags in the car for the hospital. I think it was around 1 or so.

I wasn’t ready to go, I wanted to labor at home and time my contractions. So we spent the day timing my contractions, him playing Xbox and relaxing. I showered again around 6 pm or so, it was getting closer.

Around 9 pm we left for the hospital. My contractions were about 3-5 minutes apart. We stopped at 7/11, so Phil could get a coffee. My words to myself during the car ride were, ‘It will pass, it will pass’.

We parked in Staff parking at Stony Brook because since I am a staff member, we can park for free. However, you come in on the 2nd floor. We walked up 4 non working escalators, Phil was freaking out, I did fine. We got to the 8th floor and I checked in.

The first resident came in, sweet guy. He was asking the medical history and I was having a contraction, so I was trying to get off the table to walk and he freaked out, saying you shouldn’t do that, just as the doctor came in.

They looked at me and were surprised I was 5.5 cms. They admitted me at 11 pm. As we were walking over the Labor and Delivery room, my contractions were so intense. By the time I got to my room, I was begging for an epidural and was screaming for my mom.

Phil called my mom, she heard me screaming in the backround. The anthesogist finally came in and to give me an epidural. Phil needed to leave the room. He went to try and find the car to get our stuff. They finally gave me the epidural, which was really hard because I started to feel like I needed to push. I was screaming I need to push!

The nurse, who was a male nurse namd Mark and when I look back on everything was amazing, checked me and said okay, you are ready to push. So basically, the epidural didn’t really help me, I went from 5.5 cm to 10 cm in less than hour. Ouch!!!!

I remember asking for Phil and he was back and we started pushing. Ladies, for me pushing was the hardest part. I didn’t expect pushing to be so hard. I was screaming I want relief. They were coaching me on how to push. A nurse came in and said my mom was here and asked if I wanted her. I screamed Yes and she came running in.

Eventually, the 2 woman Dr’s came in, Mark the nurse and a sweet intern were all coaching me to push. I did scream at them because when I wasn’t pushing, they were having conversations with Phil and each other and I was like, how can they just idlly chit chat like that. I told everyone to 'Be Quiet!'

After almost 2 hours of pushing, Gavin Cobalt entered our world at 1:52 am with my husband on my left and my mom on my right. My husband cut the cord and they put Gavin on my chest. He was absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!! The first thing I said was, “He has the Burst nose!” (That is my family’s nose). He was born with the Burst button nose, a full head of dark hair, dark blue eyes and a rosy complexion. He was 7lbs 10oz and 20 ¾ cm of beauty.

He was on my chest for about 20 - 25 minutes while they massage the placenta out of me, then they took him for about 10 minutes as they stitched me up (which the epidural did help with that) and gave him back to me and he breastfed for the first time.

I was so happy about that! He latched on like a champ!

Eventually they took him and they brought me to my room, where my husband was waiting for me. The nurse I had when I got back to my room was amazing. She helped me to the bathroom, I was really, really swollen and I tore at 3 level (the levels are from 1 to 4). She got me all settled.

My mom and Phil’s parent’s came in and explained that they are going to keep Gavin in the nursery under the warmer for a few hours, but will bring him in as soon as he warms up a bit. Phil and I were fine with that, it was 4:30 am and we needed to sleep a bit. Phil stayed with me and he slept and I tried to sleep, but I was in pain and still amazed and dazed a bit.

I ordered breakfast around 6:45 am and they brought Gavin back to us at around 7 – 7:30 am. I breastfed again and we all just bonded for a few hours.

My Birth Experience was everything that I hoped it would be and more. Having Phil and my mom by my side was the best thing. Phil amazed me that night, his instincts with Gavin and I are amazing. My mom was so happy to be part of it. That wasn’t the plan, but I am so glad she was there.

I am so glad I labored at home, I really think that is what helped me progress and have a vaginally birth. I feel like I had a natural birth, because by the time I got the epidural, I was already 10 cms and pushing.

I have to thank a number of people for the wonderful advice they gave me about labor and birth. Thank you Tina, Janel, Vanessa, and Chris.

Breastfeeding is going well overall, of course I question things, but I am pretty confident he is getting enough because I count all the pees and poopies and he is producing enough.

He is growing and thriving. He has filled out, his cheeks and legs have filled out. I can’t really explain it, I just see it.

Gavin Cobalt rocked our world on Monday, April 7 at 1:52 am! We are so in love with him and he continues to rock our world everyday!
