GBS + Girls...Q re: your delivery
I just had my peanut last Sat. & had a Q...I tested positive for Group B strep & so was on the antibiotics at the hospital but they took my peanut to the NICU to start her on antibiotics after the delivery...I wanted to know if this was standard procedure.....(b/c I was devastated when they said they were taking her to the NICU).....or I didn't know if it was b/c my water had broke more than 24 hours b4 & they weren't taking chances.
Thanks ladies

Re: GBS + Girls...Q re: your delivery
it was both.. GBS can be very dangerous if the baby gets it.. they treat the moms but sometimes that's not enough.. if you or the baby had a fever during delivery than the baby needed antibiotics. Also, it depends on how long YOU were on the antibiotics.. sometimes they don't get in enough doses before you deliver. If your water broke more than 24 hours before delivery that makes the risk of the baby even greater.. We would usuallly treat the baby with antibiotics until a 48 hour blood culture comes back negative on the baby. HTH

Re: GBS + Girls...Q re: your delivery
I had it with my son and he was in the NICU but had nothing to do with it and he wasn't on anti-biotics for it. He was in the regular nursery for a short time. He had low blood sugar as a result of my GD (which was controlled all along but for some reason he didn't respond when cut off from me).

I tested positive for the Strep, but Lily wasn't taken to NICU...so I'm thinking it was a combination of factors.
