Generator hook up to house? Anyone do this?
Can anyone recc a good electrician (licensed) that can set up the generator hook up to the house? If you had this done - how did it work out? TIA!

Just had a natural gas generator done a few weeks ago. So far so good. It tests itself weekly but we thankfully haven't had to use it for real yet except for the demo. We're not on Long Island so no recc. It's been a great peace of mind during all these storms.

I haven't had it done, but am planning on doing it myself with my brother in law's help. My father has one at his house (brother in law installed it) and it works great. Something similar to the link below. we did it for a portable generator, not permenantly installed, you basically take a special cord and plug it into this outlet on the house and it runs the circuits that are hooked up to the transfer panel
Its not hard for an electrician to do, I think it took a few hours to install

granted its not a full blown permantly installed set up like the previous poster, but it worked well during Sandy for them and a lot cheaper

We did this. DH did it for us. We haven't needed to use it but it will be a relief if and when we do.

Manual transfer switches are a huge waste of money you are much better off with an Interlock Kit . If you a stuck on using a transfer switch get an automatic one these are used on the bigger generators that you see on the side of peoples houses but can be hooked up to portable generators as well. But just remember with a transfer switch whether it be auto or manual you can only go as high as 10 circuits before the added expense of doing more.

I do not know what it is called, but we have a separate panel box just for the generator. We had the electrician hook up the oil burner, fridge, and the bedroom lights to the new panel. When we lose power we switch off the regular turn on the new and turn on the generator. It came in handy during Irene and Sandy, since we were without power for a week for both storms.
I can look up the electricians name for you. He was a friend of my dad's, but he is licensed.
