Has anyone gone for an appointment for this? What happens at appointment?

I saw one at Winthrop. She did my whole family tree as far back as we could go with cancer and health history (wish I knew this ahead of time, I would've quizzed my parents before I went!). The she went over the current genetic screenings they do and implications. Then I had blood drawn and sent out for testing. It took about an hour. I got the results in a couple of weeks.

Re: Genetic Counseling
I went to Dr. Brian Cooperman in New Hyde Park. He's an OBGYN and Genetic Counselor. I love love love loved him. So much that I switched to him as my regular OBGYN. I live on the South shore, so it's not the easiest to get to him. But he impressed me.
My uncle came back BRCA + and because my dad is deceased, We (my siblings and I) didn't know if he was also a carrier and if we were at risk. So my insurance wouldn't just let me get the test without seeing a genetic counselor.
The appointment was about 30-40 minutes long. We went through my family tree as far back as i could remember. Asked about my immediate family and their health. How many children they had, etc. Then grand parents, uncles, aunts, cousins. There was a lot of history of cancer on my fathers side, so it was obvious that the BRCA that my uncle had, was running rampant on my fathers side through my grandfather and his siblings and their children.
Really the point of a genetic counselor is to see if you even need to be tested. Find any links and they figure your risk. They tell you about options based on results and are there to answer any questions you may have.
My sister and I came back negative. My brothers still haven't gone to get tested. But my cousin (my uncles daughter) came back positive and is surgically taking care of it to lower her chances of getting BRCA related cancers.
If you have any other questions, just ask.
