Re: germany in winter??
what part? north or south?
i lived in the southwest for a year. i thought NY winters were colder. it gets cold there (wet cold), but not as cold as NY. the north it is cold like NY, but it depends what part of the north. northwest (hamburg) is wet cold and the east by Berlin is colder, but a wet cold.
although i was friends with a girl from alaska there and she said that it was cold b/c it was a wet cold and she was used to a dry cold. she said she felt colder than in alaska. i think it was a normal wet cold.
HTH.

I bet she was talking about those wind storms that we had about 2 weeks ago...the one where it took me 7 hours to get home from Leeds, which is 45 miles away! It was horrible! But not quite a hurricane!!!

just FYI, most Germans (not the youth of course) don't wear jeans. It's not inappropriate at all, but they will know you are American. That's not bad though, they usually will want to practice their English with you.

Is that true? What do they wear? Slacks? Gauchos? Knickerbockers? I always see German tourists and they are wearing jeans and kickers....even the parents!!! Sometimes the ones who are older wear colored jeans...

Re: germany in winter??
i didnt really see the "germans not wearing jeans" when i lived there. i think yes, the older population doesnt wear jeans, but it is like that in the US as well. i mean jeans can be uncomfortable for older people. i think germans dress the most american out of all the european countries. but their jeans are different- like more european or something. it is like sleeker. or maybe it just looks different b/c europeans just look different (facial structure, body type).
where i live now, b/c we are a british commonwealth the fashion here is british. i cant quite explain it, but it seems trendy and stuff.
germans love pumas. get a nice pair of pumas and some neat jeans and you are set. they love h&m over there, so do some shopping when you arrive or before you leave. they have a lot of the same stuff the h&m in america has.
