Gestational Diabetes & The 1 hour glucose test

I am only 12 weeks. They said I have sugar in my urine. They want me to take the 1 hour glucose test now. They told me I should eat normally and that I don't have to fast.

Can you provide me any more information on this?

Is what I ate last night and this morning going to affect the test if I go in this afternoon?

I am a healthy weight on the BMI chart, I don't have a family history of diabetes and I usually eat healthy. I always exercised before I got pregnant but then I stopped- which could be a factor. I have been very sick recently and having been drinking lots of orange juice. I also had soda at the superbowl. I am worried that might affect the test if I take it today.

Any advice? I pray I don't have GD!

I can only relate my experience to you. I took the 1 hour two days after Christmas and failed. I had been eating horribly all week. I thought that that was the reason so when I had to take the 3 hour I made sure I ate very well for days leading up to it. Well, I failed it anyway. The test is designed to see how your body deals with the sugar. If the hormones aren't working properly it really dosen't matter what you ate or didn't eat. Your body either will or won't produce enough insulin. Good luck. I hope you pass!

I never had to take this test so early in pregnancy but like the pp said no matter what you eat or do not eat is going to alter the test. With my first baby i didnt fast ate normally and passed, and with this baby i did fast and passed. Good luck I hope you passChat Icon

I ate normally when I had my 1 hour test with DS. I passed and they said it doesn't really matter so much what you eat because it's testing to see how your body reacts to the sugar.

With this pregnancy, I had to do a 2 hour fasting test (they said that's the new recommendation and they are already switched over to doing it that way). So I had to fast for it.

good luck to you! Like the other poster said, it doesn't matter what you eat beforehand. Some women's bodies just doesn't process the sugars through no fault of their own.

Similarly, doesn't matter if you were in great shape and with no history of diabetes in your family...Both women I know in real life who got GD are fit. And GD will go away after the pregnancy! Chat Icon
