Get your passports now!
While talking to the travel agent last night, she said that as of Jan 07, you must have a passport to leave the country. She also said that they are backed up about 3 months with getting the passports out.
So, if you don't have one yet, and will be traveling out of the country, I suggest you go get one asap.
We're going to get ours today.

You can always rush it, but I wouldn't go crazy over it. You can just bring your birth cert with you.
The new passport requirement doesn't start until January 2007, so you should be okay.

Re: Get your passports now!
If you are really nervous about getting a passport you can get it expediated as long as you have a valid travel itinerary.
Passports are taking 3 - 4 months and the wait time will increase as it gets closer to the end of the year.
Even if you are not traveling anytime soon it is still best to have a passport because the waiting period will increase as everyone will need a passport even for cruises.

This is exactly what my travel agent told me. Do you think I'll get it by January if I did it yesterday?

You may get it between November and December.
Checking the Status of Your Application
To check the status of your application online you will need:
your last name, including suffixes without punctuations except the hyphen, (for example: Jones III, Patton Jr, Jackson-Smith, Varela Garcia), date of birth in the following format: MM/DD/YYYY, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number.

Re: Get your passports now!
I sent mine in at the end of June and got my new one about 5 weeks later. I did not pay for express and had no problems.

My boyfriend just went to get his done today and they said 2 months at the most. I guess she was just trying to scare us...I'm a bigtime procrastinator.
