Getting frustrated with potty training
So I thought we were doing really well.. Jack will say dry all day and has the occasional accident. He even goes at school. But I think it is becasue I am constantly asking him if he has to go and just putting him on. He doesn't fight and he goes. But I'm starting the think that this success is all becuase I just keep on top of him. Today I stopped asking him and putting him on the toilet to see what he would do. He doesn't tell me he has to go and just pees in his pants.
Anyone else experience this? We are on week 2 of intense training to the point where I am annoying myself always hearing "Do you have to use the potty Jack?"
Should I just continue what I am doing and just assume it will take more time for him to be proactive about it?

Re: Getting frustrated with potty training
I went through this with Delaney. I was getting mad and frustrated; she was getting upset and I said forget it for a little while.
About 1 week before her 3rd birthday, I told her, Delaney we don't have diapers anymore. She questioned me but said ok mommy, she sat, and went #2. Which shocked me.
The truth of the matter is, did she believe that the diapers were gone? No, I just think she was ready and it was a new approach.
Try the prizes, pee pee dance, bells & whistles and he'll get it. It happens when they are ready.
Like someone on here told me, if your both in tears over it, revisit it at another time. It'll happen

Yes, I think it will just take more time. I honestly dont see this as a problem, he'll get there and he's young IMO, I just looked at your profile and saw he's 2 1/2. Dont sweat it, he may not be good at getting the early signals from his body just yet...if you have to ask him if he has to go, and he goes, good for him. I'd play up that with lots of praise and not worry about the proactive part. It doesnt sound like he's purposely not going and using the potty, he's just young and not realizing at times. My oldest had just turned 3 when he PT'd and he got it overnight. My DD is 2 1/2 now and she will still wet her pants sometimes and I believe it's for the same reasons I mentioned about your son. She will use the potty to poop all the time which is a homerun unto itself, I just stay on top of her with the peeing and keep trying. Soon enough he'll be getting it on his own, you'll see.

Re: Getting frustrated with potty training
Are you using the pull-ups or some other kind of potty training diaper?
My ped. says that the best way is to pick a week when you'll pretty much be home all week, put them in big kid underwear, be prepared for a lot of accidents but by the end of the week they'll be trained. He says those training diapers - even those Feel N Learn ones - just prolong the process b/c a lot of times they can't feel that they've gone, where with regular underwear they feel it right away.

Re: Getting frustrated with potty training
We're almost trained here, but I am having a hard time getting him to pee on the potty ALL the time! He only goes when he is put on it, or if I hound him enough so he gets a treat if he goes. I tried for 2 days straight a few weeks ago to put him in underwear and remind him. I asked him every 5 minutes, he kept saying he didn't have to go pee. An hour later, when he said again he didn't have to go, I went to put him on the potty and he was all wet. He peed in his underwear and didn't mind at all..... *sigh*
The good thing is, aside from one accident, he is poopy trained since Christmas. He does really well, so I am hoping in time, he gets the pee thing going all the time.
Oh, Andrew will be 3 in May.
HTH
ETA: I agree that Pull-up don't help at all. Andrew totally sees them as "diapers" and actually told me its ok to pee in them because of that! He's too smart, I swear!

Re: Getting frustrated with potty training
I never use pull-ups..I think they are pointess for the reasons you mentioned. I actually use the Gerber training pants with the vinyl covering, so that if he wets his pants it doesn't get all over. On the days we are home all day and he doesnt have school, he goes around in his tighty whiteys! I guess I just need to be more patient and not expect it to happen overnight.
Thanks ladies
