Getting over stupid toddler fears and idiosynchrosies (not sure if that is what you call them)?

Not sure if anyone else has a toddler with some random fears. How did you get rid of them?

DD is deathly afraid of the vacuum. She screams and cries when we use it and tells us to put it back in its place.

She also doesn't like it when I iron. She carries on and cries when I set up the board.

She is a little weird with the blow dryer but not horrible.

When DH's electric toothbrush is charging, it blinks and she tells me to turn it off. And some other blinking things bother her.

How do I get over these obstacles without hysterics?

Right now I vacuum when she is not around and try to do the other stuff out of her sight but we need to move beyond this....Chat Icon

Wish I could help you but we're in the same boat. DD HATES the vacuum, if its left out she'll point at it & say "NO". DH put her fave teddy on it & said he was giving teddy a ride & she actually came over & took teddy off, but it didn't help.

She also hates our burglar alarm light that blinks, she points at it and keeps saying "NO".

This started about 3-4 months ago & now the burglar alarm doesn't bother her, DH lifted her & let her touch the light & we keep saying its a nice light (stupid, but whatever....)

I was thinking of maybe buying a toy vacuum & having her "help" mommy, but haven't yet.

So far with all DDs fears we let her touch the item and as long as its something safe we let her use it.

eta: the toy vacuum idea worked for us.. she now follows us with it and helps.

DS is afraid of the washer/dryer, Magic Bullet, and hand stick blender (in addition to the vacuum cleaner). When the landscaper comes- that's a whole other story. He's afraid of every room in the house because of all the noise they make outside LOL.

He's slowly getting over the washer/dryer by sitting in the laundry room when the machine's on. He's starting to understand that the machine won't hurt him or me. I did something similar with the hand stick blender and now he's slowly getting used to its noise. I stick him in his high chair near the blender when I'm using it so he can watch what I do.

I don't think he'll ever get over the vacuum cleaner though Chat Icon

I asked my ped for advice at my DS's 3 yr old well visit because he's terrified of the vacuum and the electric mixer. She told me to ask his "help", to help me turn it on and then offer to let him help me push the vacuum.... apparently being "in control" of it might take away the scariness.

So far it's working. He's "helped" me about 3 or 4 times already and it's better already.

My 2 1/2 year old has all of the same exact fears and they are true fears so I am not forcing her to be exposed to them just yet. She gets instant tears and gets hysterical. How was she as an infant? My DD was always a sensitive child, e.g., if a kid pushed her (still to this day) out went the lip more because her feelings were hurt, rather than the act itself. It breaks my heart. My 9 month old DS chases the vacuum when it is on. I read that you shouldn't force them to like these things so young, but everyone's advice is good about having them help. As for my DD, that doesn't work with her. She would even laugh and say "the vacuum is funny" but then her eyes would fill with tears because she truly is afraid.

So no advice, just Chat Icon because I can relate!

I am doing nothing really but comforting him. He is scared of noises, ie: the owl outside his room, firetrucks, helicopters. There is nothing more I can do.

My DD is afraid of the same things too. Anything that makes a noise similar to a vaccuum scares the bejesus out of her. I try to show her that it's not too scary and it doesn't hurt you. Not really working though.

I like the idea of helping. Maybe if she could have some ownership over the noise and know how it's made, she won't be a scared.Chat Icon I don't know. I'd love to hear some advice on this as well.

My nephew was deathly afraid of the windshield wipers for a few months. He would scream and cry and turn his head so he couldn't see them. It just went away one day.

I think it's pretty common for toddlers to be afraid of appliances, especially ones that make noise. Makes sense really, they are more aware, but not aware enough to understand these things won't hurt them.

I hold DS, calm him down, and tell him over and over the thing is okay, it won't bother him, etc. Some things I just can't do around him though, like use the vacuum. I've tried showing him how it works and press the buttons, but he can't push it , hes' too young.

It's actually ironic that she doesn't like you ironing because I remember when you did it on a near nightly basisChat Icon

HAHA, yes, I still DO iron a lot, but I usually iron at night after she is asleep or early morning before she gets up. I don't know why she hates it so much. Maybe she really IS a princess. No ironing or vacuumingChat Icon
