Getting pre-approved

Hi, can anyone give me some insight on getting pre-approved? What steps do I have to take, and do you have any recommendations on who to go through and who NOT to go through? Thanks so much! Also, once you get pre-approved, how long does that last? Thanks.

Give this guy a call. He got me a killer deal on an interest rate back in August.

Re: Getting pre-approved

For us to get preapproved, it was about the same as actually getting approved in general. We needed previous income returns, pay stubs, all our bank info, loans, and credit reports. It was a while ago so I don't remember how long it took - but it wasn't very long- and I'm not really sure how long it lasted, but I want to say maybe 3 months or so. Sorry, I'm a little fuzzy on the details. Chat Icon Good luck!

Re: Getting pre-approved

Thanks for your help! Once you get pre-approved from a company, must you go with them? Or can you shop around?

No, I'm pretty sure you can still go with whoever you want.

Re: Getting pre-approved

FYI-anyone can give you a pre-approval. If you have a friend in the mortgage industry they will do one for you. It is really just a piece of paper-if you want one FM me DH is a mortgage broker-he will do it for you. FYI even if you have a pre-approval it does not mean you are approved for a loan-it means they think they can probably find one for you-don't worry though as long as your scores are aboe 620 you should be fine

Re: Getting pre-approved

wow for us it was nothing, 2 phone calls to two different mortgage lenders for rate comparisons - we gave our social security numbers and they were like here you are preapproved. that was litterally it.

I just called my current lender, gave them DH's info (they already had mine) and voila - pre-approved!

I guess what I was told was that was pre-qualified - and pre-approval was different (that was from the guy I used.)Chat Icon

ETA - basically when we got the contract signed and had to go to the actual approval stage, it was all basically done (though, for us we did have to re-submit some things b/c it was so long after the contract date that we closed - 6 months), so it was really basically a mortgage commitment but without a house to assign it to yet.
