Getting rid of old PCs
Is there a how to?
I guess I have to wipe the hard drive? Should I bring it somewhere to recycle?
This is phase 2 of my clean the office project.
TIA!

If it's a dell, you can bring them to staples to get recycled.

It's best if you drill a screw into the hard drive so it can never be used again.
A normal windows 'format' will still leave some data on the disk and someone could reconstruct the data (if they had the time and software.)

Go on Gazelle.com where you can recycle your old electronic gadgets and even get cash for some.

ooo..tell me more about this. Where exactly do you drill? Can I just take the HD out and smash it into a million pieces?
that would make my clean the office project so much more fulfilling.

that will definitely work....
Make sure you damage the platters inside the drive.

Re: Getting rid of old PCs
If you like there's an organization called Per Scholas in the Bronx that takes donated old computers (they have certain specificiations) and then their students take them apart and rebuild them in order to learn.
I believe they also wipe the hard drive for you so you don't have to worry about it...here's a link to their site:

Drilling anywhere near the middle would be fine. Have fun!

Re: Getting rid of old PCs
Town of Huntington has a recycling program for electronics - maybe your town does too?
DH takes out the HD and smashes it.
