Getting yourselves "fixed"
I think, with 40 approaching, that DH and I should start considering one of us getting "fixed".
Male family members and friends have had it done and joke about the pain and whatnot... bags of frozen peas on their crotches and such... but I was curious what the process was like?
I would consider it for myself also, but it seems like it would be more invasive, dangerous and expensive for me.
If you could share it all... how you chose the doctor, the process, how long it takes, the healing process, and if you're comfortable also the cost, that would be great.
Anyone else thinking about this?

Re: Getting yourselves "fixed"
I have a few friend's DHs who have had it done and a few family members.
I don't know how they found the doctor, but I will tell you, after the surgery is done, make sure DH goes for the follow up test to check for any remaining sperm. My uncle did not do this....resulting in my cousin.

Re: Getting yourselves "fixed"
A close (male) friend of mine did it. He and his DW researched and came to the conclusion it is less invasive and physically easier for him than for her. He said the recovery was pretty quick and not very painful. No heavy lifting or strenuous activity for a little while, and he had to go back to the Dr to give a sample to make sure it REALLY took effect. Other than that, he just sat around for a couple of days with bags of frozen veggies on his lap.

Ahhh see... Good to know. My boss at my old job wound up with another child after his but there was some question whether it was his or not. So I didn't know if that was 'true' that it might not 'take'.

It's not that the procedure doesn't "take" (though there is a miniscule chance of a vasectomy reversing itself over time); it's that there is still stored sperm from before the procedure... So you do need to have a test done afterwards to make sure there are no more remaining sperm.

Re: Getting yourselves "fixed"
My DH and i have been debating this as well, since I know for sure that I am done. There is another female procedure that can be done in the Dr's office called ESSURE, which is less invasive than having your tubes tied, but will require an HSG (sonogram with dye) to see if the tubes are sealed off.
I personally would rather have my DH get snipped. He has an excellent urologist in East Setauket if you need a referal

I;ve had an HSG, it hurts, ALOT, especially if there is a blockage in one of the tubes (I had one, but the dye cleared it out). It was excruciating.

Re: Getting yourselves "fixed"
My brother in law got a vasectomy after having five kids. He said it was quick and painless. Just had to rest for a few days (no heavy lifting)

My BIL had it done and was fine after a day or two. Much less involved for a male then female. He had it done right in an Urology office.

Re: Getting yourselves "fixed"
My DH had one done over the summer...it wasnt that bad.... well for me at least!! He went back for his follow up to make sure that none of his boys were left! Everything came back negative so we are in the clear!
It took all of about 10 mins and he rested for a few days.

We're getting our dog neutered shortly, I should ask if they have a 2 for 1 special.

I personally feel the male should do it. My DH says he won't but we'll see.

Because I think peas are the worst of the frozen items. I mean - would you want to waste something good to be used for ball icing? I don't feel guilty throwing away a bag of peas because they defrosted and are yucky. But to throw away some frozen french fries - that's just wrong.

I imagine lumpy broccoli or cauliflower wouldn't feel as good?

My friend also used tater tots and a mixed bag of corn and carrots for variety.

I'm picturing myself standing in front of the freezer with a bag of peas in one hand and a bag of tater tots in the other and asking my husband, "What are you in the mood for?"
