Gift basket for someone who passed?
We moved about 6 months ago, my old neighbor across the street texted me to let me know about a month ago my neighbor next door had passed from covid. They bought the house the year prior and we lived next to them about a year or so. He had a wife and daughter. I’m so upset by this. They were THE MOST careful people you could imagine. I feel so devastated for them. They came from Haiti to America about 5 years ago and worked so hard for that house. He was the most loving, compassionate, down to earth guy I knew and LOVED his wife and daughter with everything he had and it showed day in and day out. I want to send his wife and daughter something but I hate to say I know very little what is culturally acceptable for a passing. Do I send flowers? Money? Card? I want to be respectful. Anyone have any insight?

I’m so sorry, how awful. I don’t know Haitian customs either, so I would err on the side of caution and send a fruit basket of some sort with a card.

Maybe a GC to the local grocery store? Money might be tight and that way they can buy exactly what they’ll use.
ETA: And definitely a heartfelt card. I’m sure they would be touched that you’re still thinking of them.

I mean no disrespect, but outside of the context of shiva, it would be odd for a non Jewish family to receive an unexpected delivery of hot food for near immediate consumption. It’s a lovely gesture for sure, but I’m not sure it’s universal sympathy procedure from a cultural standpoint.

I think Haiti is a pretty Catholic country, so maybe a Mass Card. But, I would think a sympathy card with a gift card to a local deli or something like that might be best.

I tend to never send money to someone or family if a loved one died. I dont get that concept, nor do I send fruit either because my experience is the fruit always taste horrible, when sent to us.
IMO nothing beats a visit, and a sympathy card, either store bought, self written or Mass card if catholic. I would not send food either unless I know what they eat. Unless you buy from a Haitian deli. OR something from a bakery
Very kind of you to want to send something

For me, a heartfelt sympathy card is the best gift you can send. But if you want to send something, I would do a local supermarket gift card like someone mentioned.

A sympathy card with a check or one without out. You can send the usual flowers to the service or edible arrange but I am sure the first one is the best.

I’m going to get a Mass card and a general gift card so they can use it for anything they need. I’m just so sad over this and really hope it will help
