gift for 80 year old grandma?
My grandma is turning 80 in a few weeks. My mom is throwing a huge party for her.
DH and I dont know what to get her-- she has everything she'd ever need...
Any suggestions?

What about taking her for a manicure? Does she treat herself to things like that? It could be a special day if you go with her, treat her to lunch afterwards too maybe (maybe have DH meet up with you too so he feels like he's not left out in the gift!)

My DH's Aunt just turned 90 & we got her the fruit of the month club in the smaller size from Harry & David. She likes to eat well & since she lives alone getting out the the store often is hard for her.

how about a collage of photos and memorabilia from her 80 years? you could make a scrapbook or do a photo collage?

for my grandmas bday i gave her a card and said that i would treat her to lunch.
We went a few days later and she LOVED it. I think it was better than a real gift

My Grandma is turning 92 this month and I made her a collage poster of recent pics on Snapfish and then framed it!

Does she get her hair done? My grandma goes every week , so we always get her a gift certificate to her salon as part of a group gift.
Framed updated family photos are are also good gifts.

she lives in an assisted living facility and it's very difficult for her to get around, so taking her out of the place would be difficult (not to mention we live in NJ and she's on LI...)
What do you think of making a donation to a charity/organization she supports in her honor?

What about a nice framed pic of her family? Or just a nice frame w/ a note inside telling her you'll send her a group photo to go in it of everyone at the party?

When my grandmother turned 80 (she's 91 now), I remember she also had everything. So, what we did was all chipped in and bought her 80 $1 Scratch offs...Kept her busy for hours and she won $$ too.

My Grandma is 96 and lives with my parents. There is nothing she needs. We always take her out for lunch as a gift, she loves it.

Would it be difficult or impossible to get her out? Just curious.
I think the fact that she doesn't get out much might make a gift like a lunch or dinner out that much more special. She'd get to spend time with you, too, which I'm sure would mean a lot to her.
If it's impossible to get her out, I'd go for something sentimental -- a photo album or scrap book of memories from over the years or a donation to her favorite charity.

same here, its the only thing i can ever think of. Mines 93 and she goes to the "beauty parlor" every saturday.

What about a basket of her favorite foods and treats? We always do that for my grandma, and did it for my great-grandma when she was in a nursing home.

I agree. When my grandfather was in a nursing home near Saratoga, my dad would drive up there from LI, and my uncle would fly up from Atlanta, to take him to the track once a year & he loved it, because it was soemthing he used to do on his own before he was in a nursing home.
On regular visits, my dad would bring him Cadburry chocolate bars, since they were his favorte, and he coudln't run out to the store & get them on his own.
For Christmas, he'd bring him a bunch,
and bake some things from traditional family recipes.
