gift ideas, please :-)
so my dad is having a hip replacement in a couple weeks hes only 55, and likes to be active and doing stuff all the time, so this will be hard for him! i'm trying to think of something to get him to keep him entertained after the surgery. he'll be in the hospital for a few days, then in a rehab center for almost a week to get physical therapy, and then even after that he won't be able to move around too too much for a few weeks... hes not much of a reader, and if he does read its really "light", easy reading stuff... he has no idea how to work electronics- LOL so a PSP or gameboy would be out... any ideas!?! i swear hes the hardest person to buy for!!

Maybe a Netflix subscription? Then he can rent movies and tv shows for a few months while he rests.

Re: gift ideas, please :-)
Hi! My dad had doublehip surgery in 2001. Did the dr. tell you that he'd be resting a lot for a few weeks afterwards? I was shocked to hear that my dad wouldn't be resting afterwareds, they had him up the next day walking- and make him walk a lot, even while in the hospital to make sure that his body was able to handle the new change and start getting used to the new hip(s). We got our puppy while my dad was recovering in the hospital and we let her stay with him b/c they motivated eachother to walk She motivated him to get out and he motivated her to learn how to walk well on a leash. He had a walker w/ 4 tennis balls for the feet so he could walk on the concrete in the road. My dad was 55 when he had his hip replacement as well. Walking in water was the best thing for him (according to him) so what about a membership to a pool or something (if he doesn't leave near water).

thanks!! yeah-- i guess thats true! i worked as a PT aide in college, so now that i'm remembering, they did keep the patients pretty busy with their therapies and moving around... so maybe he won't be as bored as i think he will i'm glad to hear about walking in water... my parents actually have an inground pool at their house, so i'm sure he'll be doing that. i know they said the PT will come to the house for a few weeks afterwards, too and do therapy there. thanks for helping me realize that hes probably not gonna be as bored as i think. maybe i'll get them a gift card to a take out place so my mom can take him some "real" food while hes at the rehab center...

Re: gift ideas, please :-)
does he like to do crosswords or sudoku puzzles? those can be fun if you're stuck in bed!
maybe any dvds and/or a portable dvd player (I've seen some cheap-ish ones on amazon!)
his favorite snacks...

My dad had the same surgery before he was 60, too (about 6 years ago). I hope your dad comes through with flying colors! The recovery is long, but my dad feels SO much better now.
I just wanted to wish your dad the best of luck!

When you described him the first thing that came to mind was JITTERBUG
although that is probably not a good gift. What about an IPOD Shuffle? You can load it with music he likes and I dont' think there are many buttons.
