Gift Question with Work
Ok, I work as a marketing person for a # of sales guys. I make them a lot of money. WOuld be nice if I got that. LOL!
Anyway, around this time of year I get a lot of very nice gifts from them. Normally I write a very nice "thank you" back to them when I get a gift and I send holiday cards (if I remember or I can).
Only a few times a year I've given them something back, but something little. They do make a lot more than me and I work for them.
Am I supposed to get them something? Only person I get for is for my boss. It's a small team so we usually chip in. How do you do it?

Re: Gift Question with Work
if you haven't in the past, what makes you think you have to now?
and honestly, if you work for them, then i don't believe you're expected to get them a gift as well.

Re: Gift Question with Work
I don't believe in gifting up at work and think a thank you is enough.
If you really want to do something for everyone I'd bring in a cookie tray or maybe bring in bagels & cream cheese one morning for breakfast. But I don't think it's necessary.

thanks! I just wasn't sure what the etiquette was. I never gifted up except my boss.
Oh, I don't work in the same office as them. They're all over the North East.

Re: Gift Question with Work
I personally think a nice thank you card is enough. If you want to bake and bring in goodies, thats very nice and I think enough.

Re: Gift Question with Work
I don't give my bosses gifts. I give them holiday cards. I don't feel I am expected to gift up, and even if I did, I wouldn't - I work for a bunch of doctors. They don't need my $20 gift.

Re: Gift Question with Work
As a department, we all chip in a few $$ for gift cards for the supervisors and big bosses. They in turn treat us to a catered lunch. I bake cookies and cupcakes on that day and other people bring in chips/snacks. Works fine for us.

Re: Gift Question with Work
I wouldn't. They are getting you something b/c you work for them, not b/c you are friends.
I do gift up to my supervisor, only b/c the first yar I was here, soemone else asked me to chip in w/ her and then I felt I couldn't stop gifting after she left, but the other person in my departent does too. There are jsut 3 of us. I wouldn't do this at a new job.
I am buying soemthing for an assistnat in another department who helps me out even though she doesn't really work for me, and I don't expect/want her to buy anything for me.
