gifts for one year old birthday?
Both of my cousins are having 1 year old birthday parties for their children & I have no idea what people give these days. Do you think they would expect money or toys? One is a girl & one's a boy. Any suggestions would help. Thanks

kids have SO MANY toys these days, you are better off asking them what they need.....our son turned one in july, and he got some great stuff - his favorite was the Mega Blox bulldozer that was filled with large size legos (mega blox).

That's what I was thinking, they probably have so many toys. That mega blox does sound good, maybe I'll try to find out if they have one. Thanks

All great gifts, but I agree with PP to ask the parents - you don't know what they already have/want.

We also got mostly cash, checks or gift cards. Most people gave $100. Some gave $100 per person.
I used to give a default $100 for first birthdays for people we knew before kids.
We are just now getting invited to first birthdays for people we have only met a handful of times. Not sure what to give.

I'll never be able to be a SAHM spending 100 for every party But I don't want to be cheap so I'll cut something out of DH's budget Thanks for the ideas

Wow $100 on a 1st birthday gift? This would not have occurred to me. Now I feel cheap.

Re: gifts for one year old birthday?
Wow! You guys are super generous!
I would ask if the kid (parent!) has a wish list for the kid. For a friend that I just met recently I would give something around $30. For an extended relative I would probably give something around $30-50. For my nieces and nephews I would do something for $50ish.

I think it depends on the venue. If it is a casual party, I would probably give a toy gift. If it is at a nice restaurant or catering hall, I would cover my plate with cash.
DS#1's first birthday was all adults and only 1 other kid. We served a 7 course formal meal.
DS#1 is now turning 3 and we frequently attend birthday parties. We usually give gifts in the $20 range. These are people we have known for a few months from preschool or playgroups.
