Girl abducted on Long Island, released
(Long Island - WABC, April 19, 2007) - Police say a girl on Long Island was kidnapped right in front of her home -- but it was quick thinking that may have saved her life.
Now, investigators are scouring the area around Cottontail Road in Melville for the suspect.
Eyewitness News reporter Emily Smith is there with details.
It's turned into a nightmare for parents out here. Police say the young girl is safe now with her parents, though petrified knowing someone is still out there.
This upscale neighborhood in Melville, Suffolk County was transformed Thursday into a scary place as neighbors found out that a little nine-year-old girl was abducted for a short time.
"I can only pray that he's caught and brought to justice," a neighbor told us.
Investigators were camped out in front of the girl's home on Cottontail Road and canvassing the neighborhood for more than six hours in hopes of finding evidence.
Authorities say an unidentified man in his thirties pulled up the girl's home as she went to get the mail after school. They say he got out and physically picked her up with his hands and put her in the car.
"She was crying, yelling at the top of her lungs," said Suffolk County Police Officer Thomas O'Heir.
Police believe that screaming is what saved her life, because a block and a half later the man allegedly stopped the car and told the girl 'just get out.'
"Her mother immediately said she was pale, crying, out of breath," O'Heir said.
All the schools in the area have been notified. Police are only saying the suspect is a man in his thirties driving a blue vehicle.
They said on the news it was a Blue Honda Pilot.

I heard this on the 11 o'c news last night and I couldn't sleep thinking about it.
She just went to the mailbox and he grabbed her in daylight. It's just so scary. I can't even think about what might have happened to her if she didn't scream and shout.
