girls having or have twins..please help!!
my sil is pg with twins and having such a hard pregnancy..she is 21 weeks and is already on bedrest because the specialist said the little girl has to catch up with the boy in weight..so this week went to doc and the girl grew but the doc said he wasnt happy with the percentile she is in(9%)..this doc has NO bedside manor and is stressing her out..they offered an amnio to her and said to rule out chromosonal disorder or something? and she would have to get it this week..and that if it is, she would have to terminate the pregancy..and risk losing the boy too..I DONT GET IT..isnt it normal for twins to be different in size? my sil went through so much to TTC and its a blessing she is pg..can anyone please give me some good news about this? this specialist doesnt give her answers at all..he stresses her out. and she waits to call her regular doc and he gives her more comforting news..and doesnt act scared..its just so hard..and i want to see her have a successful healthy pregnancy..im so scared for her and her dh..PLEASE HELP..thanks so much!!

I would be seeking a second opinion before undergoing an amnio.
I was 5lbs 1oz, my twin was 6lbs, 2oz.

Re: girls having or have twins..please help!!
My best friend had twins(early at 29 weeks) Sydney was 3.4 and Reese was 2.8 lbs at birth. Sydney now weighs 11 lbs and Reese about 9.5. They were in the NICU for about a month but are both doing great. Is she seeing a high risk OB? She should if possible. There are supposed to be some excellent ones at North Shore and Stonybrook. There is usually a smaller twin I think. Good luck.

Re: girls having or have twins..please help!!
Get a second opinion!!!!!
Usually twins are about the same size. They can be off a lb. or so but that's usually later in the pregnancy where they 1-2 lb's off. Early on they are usually close.
She really needs to get a second opinion. This is serious, with her complications an amnio can be dangerous. There are other factors involved, are they identical or fraternal? Do they share a sack or are they in separate sacks? Do they share a placenta or do they each have there own? That can make a big difference in choosing the best option for her.
There are people who "terminate" or m/c one of the fetus and go on to have a healthy baby.
ETS: My BF's twins were 5 lbs 11oz & 6 lbs 4oz

Re: girls having or have twins..please help!!
I'm not having twins, but had to see a specialist for another reason and I had a women who was HORRIBLE with the bedside manner. She basically told me that most young couples like myself choose to terminate and start over or the baby just terminates on it's own!! I never went back to her and needless to say I'm now 30 weeks pregnant and from what all the test we had done are telling us we are going to have a normal, healthy baby girl.
Point of my story is to absolutely have her get a second opinion before doing anything!! Some doctors even the smartest ones has ZERO bedside manner and tell you the worst case scenario. I wish her all the best in the world!

Re: girls having or have twins..please help!!
I am having twins- the only thing I have been told about different sizes (and I am not as far along as her) is as long as they are within a week's size of each other its ok. The sono can be off a week, that's why. Ours are always about 4 days apart. I would definitely tell her to get a second opinion. The only time I've heard "amnio" mentioned (and this is for multiples or singletons) is if any of the genetic testing comes out positive. to your SIL!

Re: girls having or have twins..please help!!
I am having twins, but identical twins so i am slightly different...however she should be going to a high risk doctor. IF she is not then she should get a 2nd opinion from one of them. In addition to my high risk OB, i go to a doctor called a perintologist (sp?) who check on me every 2-3 weeks now. They pretty much are experts in pre birth issues with twins (and singletons). If the doctor is worried about the size of each of these, she should of been sent for a high tech sono with a peri. She should demand answers.
Feel free to FM me if you want any more infomration.

I had twins, but mine are identical. Mine were different sizes but becuase of TTTS, which only happens with identicals.
I would defintly get a second opinion, the problem with these specialists is they see pg women with issues, so they see more bad things then most ob's see. This moron sounds like he has no bedside manner.
I saw a Dr Goldstein in West Islip, he is affiliated with Madonna Perinatal, I saw him while there.
Good Luck to you SIL.

Re: girls having or have twins..please help!!
My aunt had twin boys who were born at 2lbs 12oz and 6lbs 2oz - their placentas were fused together so they were receiving unequal nourishment and the smaller one had a virus and needed to stay in the hospital for 2 months.
They'll be 18 in June!
Good luck to your SIL.

Re: girls having or have twins..please help!!
Get a new doctor..why would she risk her whole pregnancy without getting another opinion. Plus a high risk doctor would have much more experience with these matters.

Re: girls having or have twins..please help!!
Im sorry your sister is going through this My aunt was pregnant with twins, a boy and a girl, they found out that the girl had downs and a severe heart defect, so they wanted her to terminate that fetus to give the boy a chance, she refused. She went into labor at 30 weeks I think, they girl had died shortly before, and the boy was not doing well, they told her that he may not make it, he will be developmentally delayed and all that. He spent 2 months in the NICU before he was able to come home and they were having trouble weaning him off the ventilator. My cousin Chris is now 14, in all honors classes, a great athlete and so cute! Ther is no way in heck that I would do a risky procedure before getting the second opinion of a high risk specialist. I wish all the best to her, and I hope everything works out.
