I just wanted to say good luck on your search and thank you for considering a rescue!
And to share this:
ETS: There are also so many rescue organizations out there. One off the top of my head is Save A Pet in Port Jeff.

We got Marty from Ruff House Rescue. They have adoption events on Saturdays at PetSmart in Huntington.

A friend of mine has been helping out with her friend's rescue. She just posted about this puppy:

If anyone is interested I know someone looking to find a home for this puppy:
6 month old female pitt bull needs a home. We work too many hours, and don't have time to walk her like she needs to be walked and played with.She is house trained, and still in a playful stage. She's raised with another pitt, and 2 cats so she is use to other animals, and gets along with them perfectly. She is cinnamon and white in color, with green eyes. Very pretty. If you would like to meet her, call my cell 631-258-8861. Our alternative is the pound, but that will be our last resort. Thanks for serious inquiries.

The golden retriever is no longer available. Here is her response regarding the rescue groups:
My friend's rescue is RSVP rescue or another one I know is Craig Fields bully crew rescue, they both have face book pages. I know Criags rescue has 3 dogs under 7 months

Bobbi and the Strays - Freeport (usually larger dogs) and Queens (Glendale, I think) small dogs

Town of Hempstead Animal Shellter (It's a Kill Shelter so you truly are saving a life)
Next to the TOH Animal Shelter is Last Hope
Both are in Wantagh.
The director at Brookhaven also has a private shelter in Port Jefferson I think the name is "Save A Pet"

We got Ozzie from a relatively new organization called Badass Brooklyn Foster Dog (yes, actual name). Ozzie is INCREDIBLE, and they were one of the only orgs I contacted (and there were MANY) who replied promptly and actually did a home check. They were a pleasure to work with and Ozzie is so wonderful. I liked that the dogs were in foster homes and not a shelter (or shelter than foster) so that the org sort of knew their personalities and temperament. They have a facebook page. FM me if you want more details, I HIGHLY recommend them!

You already have them on your list.. but I just want to say, we have had such a good experience adopting our 3 cats from NSAL. I highly recommend them!

I'm voting for Town of Hempstead Shelter! We adopted our Charlie from there who is the sweetest little girl ever, and it makes me happy when I hear about animals being adopted from kill shelters!

We adopted our casey bear from Brooklyn Animal Foster Network. My friend adopted her dog from Sean Casey Animal Rescue in Brooklyn.
