Giving a baby water
I was at a BBQ today and a couple has a 7 week old baby. They fed the baby formula but then a half hour later thought the baby might be hungry so they gave the baby plain water. I didn't think a baby that young could have water. Does anyone know?

I wouldn't give a baby that young water. My ped told me not to because it had no nutritional value & at that age they need all of the nutrution they can get.
Not sure if it was just because my son was premature though. Maybe full term babies are different?

my ped told me the same thing...he also said that water and juice by themselves are too thin in texture for a newborn...and sometimes causes the baby to choke on it.

Re: Giving a baby water
You CAN give a baby water but my dr said it is not necessary unless it is extremely hot out and the baby is outdoors. He said sometimes the water can fill up the baby but serves no nutritional value and adds no calories to the baby's diet. Some also give their baby's 1/2 oz. of warm water in between feedings to help with constipation. I don't give DS water but check with your dr and see what he says.

Re: Giving a baby water
WE started Noah on water at a little over a week old. B/C he was getting constipated. The Ped said up to 2 oz's a day. But he doesnt like the water, and we dont need to do it that often.
Thers nothing wrong with giving them water early on, just fills their belly and IMO if they are hungry still, they should be getting more formula not water.....
