giving private lessons
Someone asked me to give them private lessons in a foreign language. She is an adult and I am fluent in the language although I never taught a foreign language before. I have years of experience as an elem. school teacher and she was impressed when she saw me teach a lesson today.
Any ideas on how much I should charge, how long I should suggest the sessions to be and how many times a week we should meet? Obviously, I will ask her first how much time she wants to invest in this but I thought I should be ready for suggestions if she asks me.
Any thoughts would really be helpful. Thanks very much.

Re: giving private lessons
Well, I tutor Spanish, and I charge 50 an hour because it's not really my main area of expertise. For music, I charge MUCH more per hour because that's my specialty, so that's how I determine for myself.

Re: giving private lessons
Thanks so much for the information. Do you think the cost would be the same for students and for adults? Where do you do the tutoring? Is one hour a week enough, to learn a foreign language?

Re: giving private lessons
When I tutor for Spanish, it's either in my classroom or at their houses, when I teach flute it's in my house.
As for one hour a week being enough, I personally would say definitely not unless they already have a background in the language and are not really learning from the very beginning. However, I would find out if they are looking to become acquainted with the language or become conversational, and how willing are they to commit the time to learning the language. It's not an easy task for many people, as I'm sure you know.

Re: giving private lessons
I used to tutor Spanish too prior to having my daughter and I charged $50 now I only tutor if it's within my district and former students because I have to make child care arrangements. I usually tutor 1 hour in their home (in my district that I teach). Now I would probably charge closer to $65 if not 70.
I do not think learning of FL for one hour a week is enough to be honest especially for an adult. It honestly depends on what they wish to accomplish.
Feel free to FM me if you need help.

Re: giving private lessons
In all honesty, to learn a language, you need constant exposure, so unless she's willing to listen to spanish (or whatever language it is) radio, tv, and read the language through text, then one hour a week won't do much. There is so much to think about...
everyday words accents/sounds sentence structure grammar verb tense
I read French books before bed...my reading is good. But I know for myself, I need exposure verbally and auditorally to be better.
