Glass Kitchen Cabinets

My china is in my upper kitchen cabinets - it's pretty dainty and plain white...i'd love to display it, along with my other dishes but I have no space in my dining room...

I've been thinking about adding glass to the cabinets on each side of stove/microwave so I could display my china and mix in my everday dishes...

I'm undecided between glass with mullions (the grid look) or plain glass.

If you have glass cabinets would you mind sharing a picture? and what do you store in those cabinets?

Thanks!

Re: Glass Kitchen Cabinets

the plain glass with a frosted/etched design is always an option... looks very nice too

I would go with plain glass. If you add the grid you really won't see the beauty of china.

We just went through this and this was my reasoning. I felt with the grid, the shelf of the cabinet and the contents it would look really busy.

Re: Glass Kitchen Cabinets

I am always nervous about glass in the kitchen b/c i feel like i will be cleaning it 24/7 for finger prints and stuff. especially if it is a cabnit that i use oftern.

I have a glass kitchen table and while i LOVE itChat Icon it is such a PITA! i am always cleaning it!

You know, that is a really good point. My kitchen is on the small side so i wouldn't want it to look cluttered - plus i want to be able to see what's in the cabinets.

Also it would be alot easier and cheaper to have someone do a plain front and I am all about saving money! Chat Icon

Here is an inspiring photo I found. These cabinets are white but are kind of like mine in size/shape:

This is mine - I think I would want to do the cabinets on the sides of the stove.

Re: Glass Kitchen Cabinets

I'd probably do plain glass frames, no mullions. To me, the mullion really does hide what's in the cabinets... if you want to dress up the glass frame, you can always bevel the glass, although it's a little pricey to do so.

This pic is from when we had the inspection, so it's the previous owner's stuff.

Re: Glass Kitchen Cabinets

I rent. I have white cabinets with plain glass. All have the glass except two.

I hate it since you can see everything in my cabinets. The glass does not have finger prints because we grab the door or the handle, not the glass.

I seriously can't post a pic because of how unorganized it is.

I think it would look nice on both sides- obviously u know your purpose is to display china, so yeah it might need to be cleaned of fingerprints but so would any home with a china cabinet in a dining room.

You could always put ur old doors back on if u absolutely hate it- but I think that would be a nice design and good place for you to store and display your china

Re: Glass Kitchen Cabinets

thank you everyone for your responses...

i don't think i'll have to worry about fingerprints b/c we have handles on the doors and the glass would have a wood frame around it, plus DH and i are both really neat - we manage to keep our stainless steel fingerprint free so i think we'll be okay with keeping the glass clean - also no kids yet so that helps!

i keep the insides of my cabinets really neat Chat Icon i have 2 pantries in my kitchen and i already declared one for "kid storage" when we need it so i can keep my cabinets looking good. i'll be able to keep bottles, formula, baby food, sippy cups, and all the kid dishes in there (at least that is the plan!)...

i snapped some pics this morning - the left side (the neutral colored dishes and the glasses) is pretty much all of my everyday stuff and the right side is my china, which is just plain white...i mixed in colorful dishes that match the decor i have around my kitchen (to break up the starkness of the white and to make it more casual and fun) i actually am planning a trip to kohls tonight to add a set of red in there in case we do decide on the glass - red is missing and i have a lot of red in the kitchen...

i am crazy and i taped a sample of the backsplash we are leaning towards for the picture Chat Icon

ETA:
i figured out how to get an idea of what it would look like - i took two of the same photo one with doors open and one with shut, here is a pic:

my kitchen felt so "builder" when we first moved in Chat Icon and i want to get away from that feeling - i want to add in the elements i would love in a dream kitchen to this kitchen (which isn't terrible but certainly wouldn't be what i would design if i could start from scratch)...but i don't want to over do it and make the kitchen look like a clusterfcuk either Chat Icon

cute or cluttered?

Re: Glass Kitchen Cabinets

Something to think about.....I have glass doors on the cabinets above my island which is about a 2 feet away from my stove top and sometime when DH fries stuff up it somehow manages to get on the glass. BUT, if James is neat too...no worries.

AHHH!!! you are right! frying! i didn't even think of that Chat Icon i *try* to be neat when i fry a.k.a i cover the rest of the stove and counters in foil - but sometimes i do notice i get oil on my microwave - which means i probably get it on the cabinets but never noticed Chat Icon

i don't fry that much - about once a month for bacon and once a month for chicken cutlets...so for the 2 times a month it shouldn't be that bad...but i didn't even think of that! good looking out!

Nik, I def. love what you did with the pic. I love the look of the glass doors. That was a great way to figure out if you would love it or not. Chat Icon I love that style. What does your DH think of the look? I really think it fits the feel of the rest of your home, so I say go for it!!!! Chat Icon
