Go Set a Watchman...
I read this the morning that it was released in bookstores for a few reasons... when the first review came out, I knew I'd have to read it for myself to process what Harper Lee had initially conceived. If I didn't teach Mockingbird every year, I'm not sure I would have. I do love TKAM more than words can say. I just... I'm wondering if anyone else has read it and what you think.
The fact that she wrote this first is the one thing that makes me feel comforted about the Atticus I love. She didn't envision him turning out this way. She changed him TO the character I love. I'm just so conflicted on the whole thing...

I can't bring myself to read it. Your point about Lee changing Atticus to the heroic figure he is in Mockingbird does make sense though. I still think I'm leaning towards staying away.

I won't read it.
I don't believe that Harper Lee intended that old first draft which she fixed into TKAM to see the light of day.
I won't contribute to the people who seem to be abusing her incapacity for their own financial gains.

Well, as someone who teaches TKAM every year, I had to read it anyway -- not to mention being unable to process the thought of there being words she wrote and not reading them. (I also choose to believe the reports by the people who investigated the claims about Lee that she was perfectly capable of giving consent and cognizant of what was happening with all of this... maybe overly optimistic, but I don't want to think otherwise. I won't think of myself as contributing to anything that could harm her)

I feel like I want to reread TKAM since I haven't read it since HS before I read this. But I do intent to read it.

Go Set a Watchman...
I just finished reading Watchman over the weekend and I didn't really love it. I can see why her publisher chose to expand the story of Scout as a child instead. The first few chapters were pretty good but last chapters and ending just totally fell flat for me. It's important for people to understand that it's not a sequel to TKAM like it's being marketed as. I feel like it kind of ruins the whole point of TKAM if you think it's a sequel. I hope I'm explaining my thoughts right...I'm so tired today that I think I'm rambling! : )
