God Parent Question...
My cousin just had a baby and I have a VERY strong feeling they are going to ask me to be the Godmother, tonight...
What are the things that I will need to do for the Christening and thereafter? What is expected?
I have never done this before!
I am Catholic and so are they...
Thanks!

Re: God Parent Question...
your supposed to help guide the baby in his/her religious upbringing.
Nowadays, its just kind of a title. Usually you'll pay for the christening gown too.

Re: God Parent Question...
You are responsible for the spiritual growth of the child in her faith.
I'm a Godmother and I take it very seriously.
As far as gifts and the like, traditionally the Godmother buys the Christening gown. But traditions vary in every family.

I think the christening gown is what Godmother's traditionally buy. But now a days sometimes the grandparents like to do that.
I would think of buying something religious, like a little gold cross for the baby or a saints medal

My great grandmother bought the christening gown for my Goddaughter so I purchased her first cross for her to wear. I also try to do extra special things for her once and awhile, so that she knows that Godmother is not just a title.

Re: God Parent Question...
Once you are asked I would suggest that you find out from the mommy what the plans are for the dress and more specifically if there is a particular dress or style that she wants. The rest will fall into place (meaning if they plan on buying for if someone else will - they'll tell you there and then).
We also got our god children their accessories (booties, etc) and crosses.

Re: God Parent Question...
You are meant to act as a guide not only in their religious upbringing, but to be there for them in their everyday life and guide them.
My brother and I are Godparents, I bought the outfit (shopped for it with the mom), and my brother got the cross.
