Going for a Masters Degree part time?
I know I can't go for the Masters I truly want yet, since it's only a full time program, but I was thinking in the meantime I could get a master's in an educational field. I really feel it's important to further my education, especially if I need career mobility in my current field before going back to theatre. Also, with an educaiton degree I could teach theatre, which was always where I saw myself ultimately.
Are there education masters degrees for part time? Has anyone does this? And also, Can you do it without student teaching? I am looking for something that would be evenings and weekends only, maybe 1 or 2 classes at a time.
Everyone I know in a master's program for teaching has done some kind of student teaching, but I can't do that working full time.

You can't get an MAT degree without student teaching, but maybe you could find an ed. admin. MA degree that would be applicable to your job. You wouldn't be certified to teach though.

That's what I figured. I was hoping maybe there was something I hadn't heard of...
That's the great thing about getting the MFA (which is what I would do if I had the money and could quit my job), it's a terminal degree, so I could teach at the university level.
Bah humbug!
ETA: Education Admin would apply to my current job in a lot of ways. I'm in education, but not a teaching position..but I don't know how far it would get me beyond this job without also having a teaching degree. In education I would prefer the university level, or theatre at a HS. Otherwise, I'd like to stay in the for-profit ed. realm.

Re: Going for a Masters Degree part time?
You would have to student teach, but it is possible with a full time job. I student taught, worked full time, planned a wedding, and had my fiancee overseas in Iraq all in the same semester. If you really want to do it, go for it. You won't be student teaching for quite a long time anyhow. When it gets closer, work something out with your current job.

WOW! How did you do that?
My job is pretty flexible. For how long do you student teach? How many days per week?
Are there a lot of classes I could get out of the way first in the next year or two and THEN do the student teaching?

Re: Going for a Masters Degree part time?
I worked full time and went for my masters part time. I did have to quit my job when it was time to student teach though. I was fortunate though in that I still lived with my parents so my expenses weren't that high.

You basically have to take almost all of your classes before you student teach. That is why it will be a little while to get to that point.
Student teaching is usually a semester (about 10 weeks). You student teach 5 days a week and plus you will have to do planning and grading as well.

I don;t know what you consider part time but I am working and getting a second masters. I am taking 2 classes a semester at Hofstra. I am going for Literacy...and I LOVE THE PROGRAM!
Less than six credits doesn't qualify for financial aid.

What do you need to get certified in to teach drama at the secondary level?

Re: Going for a Masters Degree part time?
I am getting my masters through an online program. It is actually full-time, but since it is online I can get the lectures done during my lunch break time or on the toilet... whatever. It is A LOT of work but I think it will be worth it in the end. Plus my comapny is reimbursing me for the expenses - you should see if your current company will do the same. ETA: don't know about teaching programs though.

Re: Going for a Masters Degree part time?
I have been chipping away at it. A few classes at a time. Just try to pick a program you will be happy with and can use your masters with in the end. Most masters in education or psych you have to do student teaching or internships. Eventually I will have to quit my full time job to complete my masters.
It is hard but so worth it. Good luck!

I'm not sure. I think my drama teachers in HS had MFAs. Some of my college professors had BFAs.
That's really so far in the future, which is why it hasn't been at the top of my research list. It was really more of an "Added bonus" of getting the MFA. I was really planning to go for the MFA to practice my craft and become a better director.
I'm just feeling restless and I want to be in school and taking classes to further my education. It doesn't HAVE to be education, but that seems to make sense given my current position (education related) and my long long term goals.
I could probably also find a part time MA program in theatre in dramaturgy or criticism or something, but that wouldn't be a terminal degree, and I would still want the MFA and it would be somewhat redundant to have 2 masters degrees in theatre.
Plus I was hoping to someday go for a doctorate in dramturgy or crit... I think I poasted about this about a year ago..I was concerned about MFA programs not giving me the classes I needed when I want to go fo the PhD because it's a practical track rather than research.

Re: Going for a Masters Degree part time?
Sorry it took so long for me to respond. I was traveling home.
It was a very rough sememster for me, but I really wanted this degree! I started student teaching in September and officially finished in December, but I continued until January because I loved the kids and we were in the middle of a novel.
I had two classes that semester which corresponded to student teaching. I taught M-F from 7 to 3, worked 4-10 M-W-F and weekends, and had classes Tu/Thurs in the evenings.
Never a moments rest, but all worth it.
ETS: it seems as if you really want this, I am sure you can do it
