I usually do all the shopping myself. Going with DH cost us a pretty penny today! Chat Icon

DH, kids, what's the difference? they both grab things off the shelf and throw them in the cart, and hope you didn't notice Chat Icon

Re: Going grocery shopping w/DH costs A LOT!

when we go together it's not that bad, but when he goes by himself it's worse. And he uses me as the excuse. He saw something he knew I would like so he got it for me. Or well I know you asked for 3 but I got you 5 because I know how you like this stuff

Just stick to the list. Their is a reason why I ask for a specific amount of something Chat Icon

Chat Icon It makes me think of that Roseanne episode where she takes Becky's Girl Scout troop shopping in the supermarket and the kids find out that she's been putting generic cereal in the brand name boxChat Icon

See and I married King Koupon (yeah I know how to spell "coupon" but go with this). Every week, he gets advanced emails from all of our local suprmarkets. We search them for staple items that we tend to use more often (i.e. chicken breast, soda, butter, mayo, ketchup, CHEESE) and buy those products accordingly ALWAYS having certain things in reserve in the pantry. If something that we like but do not need is on sale, we pick it up. If I would like OREOs, I know that at least ONE of the major markets will probably have them on sale in some form or another - either buy one get one free or buy one get one half off. We save a lot of money - last year it was somewhere between $800 and $1000. That is about 6 months of cable tv. Every little bit counts.

Great idea! I always stock up but good plan with the coupons and different circulars.

Re: Going grocery shopping w/DH costs A LOT!

We have a Stop and Shop, a Waldbaums, a Pathmark and a King Kullen within a mile of each other. We regsitered with three of them and DH finds out in advance when the sales will start. We then check the cabinets to make sure we do not OVER buy, but there is only two of us. Every once in a while, we forget and end up with a little too much mayo which stinks because DH likes lite and I like regular. Diet food - feh!

I WISH my DH was that assertive, that's my job. I am the one who scans the circulars and clips coupons. he could care less about prices. if he wants it, he's buying it

I totally agree. If DH went shopping it would cost us an arm and a leg. He doesn't pay attention to sales or prices. He has no clue about that stuff. I am the bargain shopper.

Dh wont EVER use a coupon or he will forget he has it. And he has a habit of buying the most expensive stuff. I do not bring him and he goes alone on an emergency only basis!

My DH does the same thing, especially when we have a lot of replenishing to do. Sometimes we'll hit more than one supermarket, as well as a produce store, just to get the cheapest prices.

Using the store discount card (on the keyring) and coupons certainly saves a lot! That's the first thing I look at when I get the receipt. I check how much we saved before even looking at how much we spent!
