Going to Disney on 9/16

I am scheduled to go to Disney next Saturday. We are not staying at a Disney resort, but instead we are staying at Beuna Vista Suites.

Does anyone have any insight on how prepared that area is for a hurricane? Has anyone been there soon after a hurricane?

Going to Disney on 9/16

I spent my honeymoon at Disney after a hurricane. It was eerie. I can't recall which Hurricane it was but it was 2004 Halloween.

Things in the park were literally NOT there. Little shops were MIA. Still listed on the map but just not THERE. We had reservations for a Mystery Dinner in Orlando itself and they said the cabby would know where to find us because their sign was gone.

The parks were clean and it was business as usual but if you looked carefully you could see the damage hidden. Broken trees and damaged items hidden away while you were boat rides. Boats and other things pushed far far away. It could have just been me as my insurance claims eyes seeking out the damage though. I found traces everywhere I looked. But my husband said Disney itself and it's properties were clean and flawless. The city was a wreck to anyone with eyes, period.

If you could, I would try and reschedule. The entire state of FL will be hit with a massive hurricane by Sunday.
Disney is closing at 5:00 Saturday. You know it's serious if they close. Who knows when they will re-open and when they do, if it will be fully functional.

I heard on the radio this morning they are actually starting to dismantle the top of the Castle today.

I would postpone the trip. Even if it is open, I would feel crappy having a great time there when probably all the staff there had some major damage, etc to their homes. It just would not sit well with me mentally.

Not sure where you saw that, but it's not true. So far the only things Disney has canceled is the night of joy on Saturday and mnsshp on Sunday.

My trip is booked for the 19th. I've been following this very closely. Know cast members. I'm on the disboards. Have very accurate, very up to date information.

Disney has dealt with hurricanes, even major ones, throughout its years. They are well-equipped to handle it. Orlando is much farther north than the predicted first Florida landfall and is only forecast to be a Cat 1 or 2 by the time it reaches there. Even though that may cause significant wind and rain, being away from the coast, Orlando shouldn't experience the flooding other southern coastal locations might. Disney has a no risk/no loss cancellation policy surrounding hurricanes, so you can always wait, just in case it's a worst case scenario.

I would wait and see. We were down there last year for Matthew (which turned out thankfully to be a non-event for Central FL) and they closed the park one day and were up and running the next.

I am always in the wait it out camp too. Especially if there is no penalty to cancel last minute .
I almost cancelled a trip last fall due to Hurricane Matthew then at the last second it changed course and we went and it was beautiful with no ill effects other than a few palm branches down. I would have been pissed if I had canceled.
It doesn't hurt to wait....

This is their official updated Hurricane Irma page

https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/hurricane-irma-info/

As of right now, they are definitely not closing the entire park. That could change as the hurricane gets closer, but as of right now, they won't be closed.

Exactly this. Disney you can cancel for a full refund without any penalty if they are issued a hurricane warning. No questions asked. You actually can cancel until noon the day before you're due to arrive.

I'm waiting it out. Nobody knows what will happen. How much damage, etc. time will tell after Monday.

JetBlue just extended its travel waivers to Orlando (MCO) through sept 17. So you could change your flight without any fee or change in airfare.

I wouldn't cancel because of this particular storm. Disney has been through a bunch of hurricanes, and gets things operational ASAP. You are still a week away. I also wouldn't cancel because you would feel guilty having fun. That is silly. Natural disasters happen every single day all over the world, so that doesn't mean you should live your life in solitude because other people can't have fun.

I wouldn't cancel yet - see what happens. It's only the 8th now.

As far as park closures, both SIL and BIL are CM's at disney. They were told to expect an announcement this afternoon about park closures for this weekend. BIL who is a higher up at MK said with the current forecast, the parks WILL close - they are trying to determine exactly when they can safely close and still not ruin people's vacations and cause panic. He has been having meetings and phone conferences all day.

Don't forget - it's not just people on vacation - the people who work there have to be safe too.

But she's not talking about something that happened in some remote part of the world.

She's talking about feeling awkward being served by people who might be living in a disaster area and might have lost everything.

I get that.

Having said that, we don't yet know if the Orlando area is going to be in that bad of shape so in her case I would still wait and see.

But if it's that bad, I would understand the hesitation.
