Munich is the best! Definitely do Mike's Bike Tours and visit the Hofbrauhaus! You can also go to the castle (I forget the name) that Disney modeled their castle after! Have a great time!

Re: going to germany!!
frankfurt is great - central location - you can get anywhere in a few hours! I bet you could even take a side trip to paris if you wanted.
the army bases have deals on these types of side trips - ask your friend to check into them.

Neuschwanstein Castle is a must.
Hofbrauhaus...Dachau is a short drive out of Munich and worth the trip - it was a very sombering experience.
Drive along the "romantic road"...check out the Glockenspiel in Marienplatz (Munich's central square)...Neues Rathaus...

Re: going to germany!!
I went to Germany for my honeymoon for 3 weeks in June. It was beautiful.
if you guys are renting a car, I suggest you take either on (or both) of the drives through the country side...either up the Fairy Tale OR Romantic Road
the Fairy Tale Road takes you along the storybook towns of the Brothers Grimm.
the Romantic Road takes you to all of these beautiful towns and castles in and around the Black Forest.
Germany was even more beautiful, hospitable, and charming than I had ever imagined. I really enjoyed our time there. the food is great, the people are super nice. it was just a great time all around.
please also take the time of visit a concentration camp. I went to Dachau, and it was sobering. it makes you stop and think, which unfortunately we as a society do too little of.
have a GREAT time!

I actually didn't care much for the Neuschwanstein castle, especially compared to the other "real" castles there. it was never lived in "Mad" King Ludwig just built it...it was never fortified and feels to me just as "fake" as the Disney Castle.

It wasn't even finished! I really enjoyed the ride up to is and the little town down below it the most. Had the best dinner in the restaurant at the bottom. I also thought the walks around the castle were enchanting - much moreso than the castle itself.

Re: going to germany!!
i lived in germany for a year, i did a lot of stuff there, not everything, but a lot. DH and I are talking about moving there in 2 years if he can get a job. I really hope so, b/c we miss it so much and we met there
I lived about 2 hours south of frankfurt in a little university town called Tuebingen. if you get a chance check out a southern university town, such as Heidelberg or Freiburg (not the eastern Freiburg) or even Tuebingen. Also Baden-Baden is really nice and they have the nice baths there (hence the name). Dont be shy, go to the naked baths, much better than the other one...
By Lake Konstanz is beautiful as well.
Hamburg is nice too, but my time there was brief and i stayed mostly on the outside of the city in Lueneburg. I went for the Christmas Markts, so if anyone is going to Germany around Christmas time, you MUST go to a Weihnachtmarkt and drink Gluehwein.
Munich is nice (loved Hofbrauhaus and Marienplatz) and a visit to Dachau is a history site, but remember that wasnt a total concentration camp, so it only breifly touches on Holocaust history. If you are looking for more of an in-depth view on concentration camps, visit another one, but Dachau will still be a somber experience. If you go to the Olympic tower in Munich you will get nice views and you can see a BMW plant (only 5 in the world!). You will also see where the 1972 Olympic killings happened. I am a history buff, so i loved living in Germany.
A little bit outside of Munich, is Garmisch-Partenkirchen. If you go in the winter there is some great downhill and cross country skiing. also some cool hikes of ice caves. On the way to Munich stop in Ulm, you can climb the highest gothic steeple.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Berlin. I went there often. I love the history of it. I also went there often for electronic music events. In Berlin you must see: Brandenburg Tor, the Dom, Reichstag (free!), Gedankenkirche, Checkpoint Charlie and so much more to see on foot (example- remaining pieces of wall).
I heard from my classmates when i was there that Rugen, Luebeck and Nuernberg were nice as well.
I cant really think of much more, but feel free to ask any more questions.

Does Tuebingen have a tan colored castle? squarish, not gothic? it sounds very familiar - I think my host parents took me there. I'll have to go look at my brochures.
Lake Konstanz is GREAT!! I totally agree. My good friend got her masters there and I loved visiting her in the summer!

I thought he did live there for something like 100 days? Although I can't find anything to back this up. Maybe I heard it there?
