Going to Manhattan on T-day Q
I have to be in Manhattan on Thanksgiving for a Dr appt...
I'm taking the LIRR to Penn (should get there about 7:45am), and I usually take a cab to the office on 70th and York.
I'm worried about closures from the parade...Am I going to be able to get to the East side? And, more importantly, how hard will it be to get back to Penn at about 10am?
I've never taken the subway by myself , and I know I have to transfer to get where I am going...so I'm nervous to do that...
Is taking a cab going to be impossible?

If I were you, I'd take the LIRR to Penn, then take the C train to 72nd Street and try to catch a cab up there, you'll have a better shot than trying to get one in midtown where the parade will be.

Re: Going to Manhattan on T-day Q
What TV station airs the parade? Maybe check their site to see if you can get the map of the parade route and that should help you figure out if cabbing it will be a problem - or maybe Macys site since its their parade.

Re: Going to Manhattan on T-day Q
Shoot, it starts at 77th Street ... My directions are no good!
Parade Route: The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade® begins at 77th Street and Central Park West. It proceeds to Columbus Circle and turns onto Broadway. The Parade marches down Broadway and turns west on 34th Street, just past Macy's Herald Square. The parade finishes at 7th Avenue.

Re: Going to Manhattan on T-day Q
The way I would go is: when you get out of Penn, walk east on 33rd Street to Park Ave. South and take the 6 train uptown to 68th Street. Then walk over to York and 70th. The walk to the 6 train is only like 10 minutes and you will avoid the traffic completely.
ETA: It looks like you could transfer to a bus (M66 at 68th st. or M72 at 72nd St.) if you didn't want to walk the avenues to York

I think you'll be ok in a cab -- get out of Penn on 8th Avenue (the Amtrack side). THere's a taxi que there. You may have to circle around a bit near Penn Station but it shouldn't be too bad at that hour.

Re: Going to Manhattan on T-day Q
It is going to be a madhouse. I woudl try to walk as far east as possible and then catch a cab. The parade ends at Macy's- so it is going to be CRAZY around Penn Station.
If you don't want to walk, you can take the 1-2-3 uptown 1 stop to 42nd Street and then the S train to Grand Central. The east side will be a lot calmer. You can probably catch a cab around there without any problems.
ETA: Once you're in Grand Central- you can take the 4/5 to either 59th or 86th or the 6 to 70th. Good luck!

Re: Going to Manhattan on T-day Q
I'd just take the subway. There are a bunch of different ways but the best to get to 70th and York from there is walk to the N/R (34th/33rd and 6th) and take it (uptown/Queens-bound) to 59th Street. Get off at 59th and transfer to the uptown 6. Take the 6 to 68th Street. You'll be further east than the parade at that point so walking will not be an issue.

Re: Going to Manhattan on T-day Q
Lisa, I agree with walking from Penn to Park Ave South & 33rd St and catching the 6 train uptown to your stop. This way you only have to get on one train and you won't have to transfer.
You can also do this for your return from the dr - just take the 6 downtown to 33rd St then walk to Penn Station
Good luck!!

Re: Going to Manhattan on T-day Q
If it were me... I would get off the LIRR... then take the E train which is right in Penn Station (no need to go outside)... and take that to 53rd street and lex.
Then take a quick cab ride to 70th and York.
Doing it the way that was posted above... means you have to walk quite a bit. Walking from Penn to Park avenue is not quick... and actually walking from 68th and Lex to 70th and York is not quick either.
My way will definitely be the quickest and easiest to do.

I'd just take the subway.
Me too. And don't be nervous. The trains are always full of people and run quite well on Thanksgiving Day.

Not trying to be a smart a$$, but the cab tips are all assuming you are able to actually GET a cab on Thursday. I have a hard time finding a cab on a regular day

There are always plenty of cabs on the east side. Why? Because they all pick up their cabs in Queens... and come over the 59th street bridge to start their shift.
Easy pickings to get a cab on the east side.
If you can't get a cab on 53rd and 3rd avenue... walk up to 57st and go to 2nd avenue and you wont have NO PROBLEM getting a cab.
I can get a cab there anytime (even during the businest of rush hours). Its right by my job.

This sounds good considering it will be raining/snowing that day.
Another stupid question...when I find the E train (LOL), how will I know if its going uptown or downtown...I assume there will be a sign telling me? Where would that be?

Take it towards queens. And when you get off the LIRR and you enter Penn Station (where all the stores are)... walk towards 8th avenue (follow signs for the E train).
Then you will see the train and walk directly up the stairs and the E train will stop right there. The signs will say TO QUEENS. Just make sure you get on an E train... the C train also runs on that line.

Re: Going to Manhattan on T-day Q
Also if you want... if you can take the E train to 53rd and Lex... you COULD if you want transfer to the 6 train in that station (again dont have to go outside)... take that 6 train uptown to I believe 68th street.
Then you just have to walk to York avenue... assuming you don't want to deal with a cab.

Good luck. Just make sure if you take the E train you do get off at Lexington Avenue. If you stay on for one more stop... the next stop is in Queens.

Re: Going to Manhattan on T-day Q
Also, if your LIRR train stops at Woodside ( if you are on the Ronkokoma line, it should, off-peak) you can get off there, take the 7 to Grand Central & transfer to the 6 to go uptown, avoiding the west-side all together.
Also, keep in mind subways are on a Sunday schedule. Check the LIRR website for the holiday schedule too.

Re: Going to Manhattan on T-day Q
Thanks again everyone!
Found the E train, no problem, and had no trouble getting a cab on the East side. I'll definitely be doing this more often to save some $$$$. Maybe I'll even try transferring!
