Going to RE for 1st time - what to expect?
Hi Everyone,
I am going to my first RE appt. next Thursday and I was curious as to what to expect from my first visit. Just a little background, I am very irregular with my periods and a few years back I did 2 cycles of Clomid treatment through my doctors at Suffolk ob/gyn. Do you think the RE will look at my records and medical history and just jump right back into treatment or do they usually do other testing first to try and see what the underlying problem is? Also, I've seen that many of you have gotten or are getting IUI's and I was wondering also if that is a common practice with the Clomid treatment? I've never had it done and it wasn't mentioned when I did my Clomid treatment years ago so I was curious if it really increases your odds. Anyway, thanks in advance and any info. on treatments and what to expect from an RE appt. is appreciated!! Good luck to everyone who is TTC too!!
Kris

Generally, they will do some bloodwork on you and your DH after the first visit. Depending on how old the records are for your last full blood workup. Depending on which office you go to, they either do it right there or send you to a lab to have it done. The RE will probably do an internal sono at the first visit also. After they review your bloodwork and sono results, they will decide what type of treatment to use.
As far as Clomid, most RE's won't use it for more than a few months as it tends to thin the uterine lining over time. So they may try two months on Clomid and natural conception (BDing) or they may go right into IUI's with Clomid. If that doesn't work, they may move you up to injectables to increase the quality and quantity of follicles.

Agree. Also, I strongly feel that regular OBs should not be giving ppl Clomid unless they are going to do it right. My regular OB started me on Clomid, never monitored me or anything like that. He did it for 4 months. I had no idea if my lining was thinning or when I was ovulating. An RE monitors you closely and will have you trigger ovulation when they feel you're ready if you don't ovulate on your own. Whether or not they do an IUI will depend on your situation and what is causing the infertility (male factor, female, both).
Good luck to you!

Re: Going to RE for 1st time - what to expect?
Actually my ob/gyn is leaving the practice to be a fertility specialist and when I was on Clomid I was monitored EXTREMELY closely. I had blood work and sonos before, after, and during my Clomid cycle to to measure everything that was happening internally as well as my hormone levels so she didn't just put me on it and call it a day. Anyway, thanks for the posts. I look forward to my appt. next week, I will let you know how it turns out!!
