Port Washington has a ton of 2 family homes in the "manorhaven" section, very good school district.

Re: good 2 family home areas?
two families aren't as common in Nassau & Suffolk as they are in Queens but a lot of High Ranches called "Mother/Daughters" are LI's version of two familes. I hope this helps. High Ranches or Mother/Daughters are found alll over the island in almost every town

if you buy a mother daughter, you are supposed to be directly related to the tenants. and the owner also HAS to live there. as opposed to a legal two faimly, and family can live there, and it doesnt have to be the owner.
they will look the same, its how the CO was written. (of course legal two's are more $$ to get permits for)

I know that your DH doesn't want Queens - but Bayside is a great place for these. SD #26/Cardozo HS is one of the best districts in the city and bayside is more like LI than NYC, but with much less taxes!

Re: good 2 family home areas?
I would look at places that have train stations locally this way you can rent to commuters.
we own a two family in new hyde park- very close to the station.. and, new hyde park also has a good school district.
port washington is also a thought,
floral park as well- but there arent as many in floral park.

I agree. Bayside is beautiful. School District #26 is one of the best in NYC. Very pricey though but IMO worth it.

Re: good 2 family home areas?
Mineola..we lived there. There are some non-legal two families and legal twos..and Mother-daughters..
We rented a house with an apartment upstairs that wasn't legal but it was a great arrangement.

Re: good 2 family home areas?
what we are going to do- maybe- is buy it and my step sister will rent one portion and me and DH will have the other portion- I know Bayside would be a great area for this- but DH is against it and I doubt I could get my step sister to go to queens.. she's such a LI girl.
I might just go ahead and get my own house and scrub the two family idea- i have to start looking.

west babylon has a lot of duplexes that are legal. I think the schools are good, but I'm not sure.
