If you want a plantation with lots to do.....the Harbor Town or Sea Pines. Shipyard, is the plantation we always stay on, but its much quieter.
For the record, there are a few hotels, but most of it is condo rentals.

We usually hit the beach, the shops, Harbor Town has a HUGE playground. You can do lots of excursions, water sports, tons of places to eat, there are fireworks in Shelter Cove as well as childrens shows almost nightly. Sometimes, we drive to Charleston SC or Savannah GA for the day. There are tons of outlets, mini golf.
There is SO much to do there.

Disney Hilton Head Resort is also there!! In laws live on Hilton Head ask any question you have. I've been going down there since I started dating my Hubby 15 years ago!! We also have a home there too just outside of HHI in Bluffton. Shelter Cove there is stuff to do with the kids at night they have entertainment. When are you thinking about going? HHI is very kid friendly if you love the beach

Re: Good "family" place to stay in Hilton Head?
We rented a condo when we were there. I think that is a great idea with kids. It was 2 floors and was a great size. The complex was a short walk to the beach and the complex also had it's own pool and little creeks that ran through the backyards. We had our own patio and BBQ too.
