Good one Jes!!
December 5, 2006 -- JESSICA Simpson should have worked a little overtime learning her lines before she bombed in her rendition of Dolly Parton's "Nine to Five" and bolted off the stage at the Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday.
Simpson, who wore a back-baring black dress, was barely audible and clutched her stomach at times as she warbled the lyrics of the '80s megahit.
She ran off the stage after she had finished her less-than-stellar performance, and was heard muttering, "Dolly, that made me so nervous," and "You fluster me."
The pop diva appeared jittery during the tribute performance for Parton, one of the night's honorees, and was overheard whispering "so nervous" after wrapping up her shaky rendition.
In fact, Simpson's amateurish performance so stunned the celebrity-studded, black-tie audience, they didn't applaud when she ran offstage weeping.
Later, Simpson was still in tears when she joined a group of other singers in a tribute to the country legend, TMZ reported.
The fiasco was caught on tape, but CBS will likely edit out the embarrassing episode when it airs the show Dec. 26. "Jessica was overcome with emotion while performing because she's idolized Dolly her whole life. They wanted the song to be perfect," explained Simpson publicist Cindy Berger.
"After she made a mistake, she asked to re-do the song and then sang it again perfectly. She and Dolly hugged at the end . . . she came back, re-did the song, and was very happy with it." (Picture, facing page.)
The 29th annual Kennedy Center ceremony also honored movie director Steven Spielberg, singer Smokey Robinson, composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and conductor Zubin Mehta.
Jessica's sister, Ashlee, had an even worse meltdown on "Saturday Night Live" in 2004 when she tried to lip-sync a number and engineers started playing the voice track for a different song. Ashlee did a little dance and then walked off.
