Re: Good Sam in West Islip or Southside in Bay Shore
I'm delivering at Good Sam - they have a high level NICU unit and my OB is the head of the board.
I know Southside has an update maternity unit, but they don't have a true NICU and if something were to happen the baby would be transferred to Winthrop or North Shore (their affiliates)....I would prefer my baby be close by.

Re: Good Sam in West Islip or Southside in Bay Shore
I am delivering at Good Sam. I had my DD there 3 years ago and loved the labor floor but HATED the maternity floor. I had the tiniest room in the world and a roomate, and even though there were empty rooms they refused to let me or the roomate switch rooms. I also did not think they were BF friendly. However, my drs are there and there is the NICU there as well, so I am going there again.

Re: Good Sam in West Islip or Southside in Bay Shore
I likely will be delivering at Good Sam and NOT by choice, but b/c of the NICU as I have pre term labor tendancies and am having twins.
I used to work on the maternity floor and also had recent relatives deliver there and I was NOT impressed. They need to seriously uphaul and rethink how they run.
There is NEVER enough room on the floor....and its simply too busy. The rooms are way too small ....They are not BF'ing friendly and one NICU nurse told my sister to hurry up at least 5 different occasions when she tried to BF her nicu baby...
It is a good hospital for the most part and I feel safe there, I just dont prefer it.
My best friend had all 4 of her kids at SOuthside and its like a whole different experience. They have like 12 private rooms ( extra $$) and the rooms are larger, the staff is larger, and they have a whole newly renovated Maternity ward with private maternity parking, waiting room etc. It just seemed so much calmer etc.
JUST my opinion. I know TONS of people who were happy with Good Sam.

Re: Good Sam in West Islip or Southside in Bay Shore
Thanks ladies. My DR is affiliated with Good Sam or Stonybrook. He is the only OBGYN I have ever had that I am fully 100000000% comfortable with so I dont want to change DRs. All my friends had delivered at SouthSide- none at Good Sam. They all raved about Southside. I've heard from others mixed feeling on Good Sam. I had back surgery done there thought the nurses and everyone was great. From what I believe, they only have 1 or 2 private rooms at Good Sam?

I'll be at Good Sam & have heard conflicting stories as well My friend's sister & my other friend's cousin just delivered there in the past 2 weeks, so I'm going to pump them for info as soon as I can.

Re: Good Sam in West Islip or Southside in Bay Shore
I just delivered at Good Sam - I will be honest - I had some great experiences and some not so great... BUT I truly believe that will happen no matter where you deliver...
I would go where the better NICU unit is - I was ver comfortable there knowing they had a great NICU - I was very fortunate not to have to use it but if she did need it - I knew she would be well cared for...

Re: Good Sam in West Islip or Southside in Bay Shore
I delivered at Good Sam Jan 08 and will be again. I have to say I had a great experience. The nurses were wonderful. The LC was no where to be found but it was the day after new Years so that could be why. But the nurses were more then happy to help me nurse ds. They never pushed any formula or pacifiers. And were there right away if I called. The only thing I didn't like was 4 women had to share a bathroom. The bathroom was between 2 rooms and there was 2 of us in each room. But for 2 days I put up with it. And was happy the shower was in the bathroom so I didn't have to walk through the halls. I had a choice of Good Sam or Southside but wanted a hospital with a NICU just in case.

Re: Good Sam in West Islip or Southside in Bay Shore
I delivered at Good Sam in March 07. I had a GREAT experience. The nurses were all really nice and helpful. The food wasn't TERRIBLE and they were really on top of things 24/7. The girl I shared a room with was having a lot of pain and bleeding and they were really great with her also.

Good Sam.. Dr is affiliated only with Good Sam and they have a NICU so liek someone else said god forbid baby wil be taken care of well there! whereas Southside .. they would have to be transferred!
