Google classroom is going to be the bane of my existence

I just cannot keep up with the kids assignments....

Today I logged into my email (as I do each morning since I have to WFH and basically be on my laptop all day) and there were 13 new things posted between my two kids... lord give me strength lol...

Anyone else in the same boat? What are you doing to tackle everything?

We don’t do everything to be honest. We get math and reading done and do the best we can on the others. My daughter is in first grade and needs to be helped on everything.

Yes For my three kids, we are getting two math chapters a DAY to complete on Pearson, which includes two instructional videos, a lengthy class work section and a lengthy hw section. For two chapters! A writing assignment, fundations/grammer, social studies, science, oh and dont forget stem, phys Ed, music, and art. Oh and theletherpay speech, OT and PT for one kid, and ABA for another. Oh and yes I work. It’s crazy. I cry, snap at my kids, basically either neglect them all morning and then try to cram 9 hours if Instruction in after dinner when they have been tablet zombies all day., or completely forget that I have a job. I hope every day to be laid off or furloughed. I have to have my ex husband come every single day to help. I reAlize now why celebrities are quarantining with their exes.

I think personally, the focus should be math and reading and that’s it! I get that the cluster teachers want to stay relevant but this is too much for working parents. The school system is showing that it doesn’t care at all about the challenges of working mothers. They know we can’t do it all, but they don’t care.

I agree. I dont mind her doing math, science, social studies and ELA.
But then every special teacher has lists a mile long.
Like the band teacher- trying to teach them how to play but not even on video- written out (OK, to play this note, put your left ring finger on the key and turn the clarinet to the right slightly while blowing with half the amount of force)- GTFOH

The other thing that bothers me is that her main teacher has a google classroom and all the work is posted there in an orderly fashion.
The specials have their own sites, flipgrids, do this, do that, make me a video showing how you are playing your recorder, all different log in and passwords. It's too confusing and disorganized.

At this point she is doing all the assignments her teacher posts (and luckily it hasn't been too many or overwhelming) and if I get to the specials I get to it. If not, oh well.
I doubt she will end up as a failure of an adult or not get into a college of choice because she didn't make a video of her playing hot cross buns on the clarinet during this time.

I don't know what your district is telling you, but I thought the State announced that children cannot be penalized for not doing the work during this time. That if they do it, and it will increase their grade, then it counts. If it were to decrease their grade, it's not supposed to count. So, I would say do what you can.

I feel the same. I begged my principal to tell the parents what to prioritize and what was optional. And I said they should be sure to tell people that specials are optional. We are getting 50 emails a day from Art and PE. Enough already. If I need to occupy them with something I will have them do one of the specials but it should be clear that it's optional. The leadership in my SD is terrible though. I told him I don't want to have to chose between my kids falling behind and my job. A lot of us work and we don't have time to be sitting with 3 kids, at three different grade levels doing school work all day. I honestly think if they are worrying about kids falling behind, have school over the summer and just give the teachers off right now.

Re: Google classroom is going to be the bane of my existence

Our Superintendent sent a really nice email about what we should expect/be doing in terms of distance learning. She said that the actual instructional time should only be a maximum of 45 minutes per child(not independent work) because they understand that multiple kids in families need to use devices and they understand that parents work. She also said that if at any time the work becomes too much for either the child or the parents then they should take a break from the school work. I think that any school district that is assigning hours of work is ridiculous.

My son is in K and is assigned maybe 30 minutes of work a day with the option of alternating a special. I personally wish he had more work (as my child is a bit more advanced and it keeps him busy), but I understand that the teachers need to consider the needs of all families.

Just do what you can and do not sweat it if you cannot get to everything.

I working in DOE school and am busy planning and doing tele-therapy with my students all day. My son is in K. We do his work when I am done with mine in the late afternoon. We do our best. Luckily, my son's teacher isn't assigning too much work. I do prioritize math because the teacher assigns the next sequential lesson each day so I don't want to fall behind. The reading and writing we do whatever we have time for. I sometimes combine the assignments to save time. And specials.... we don't have time for that lol. I wouldn't stress about getting everything done. Easy for me to say because my son is only in Kindergarten but it's too much if you are working full time too.

Google classroom is going to be the bane of my existence

It's ridiculous. My DD is in 4th, with an IEP for dyslexia & dysgraphia. She needs help. She has a regular google classroom and then another for her SETTS teacher. We are doing the best we can, ignoring due dates. Last week we really struggled- but this week, seems like the teachers are giving a bit less work, more creative/optional stuff and longer time to get it done. And some of it is such BS- her music teacher assigned them to read about Billie Eillish and tell why you like her or not. STOP. Math & Reading- I get. these other stupid things are just causing stress for the parents and students.

So I have a 3rd grader getting about 3 hours worth of work a day and a 5th grader getting a full days worth of work. I am an essential worker working out of the house. My DH is working from home. I get texts all day from all 3 of them. The 2 kids looking for help and the DH telling me they interupt him every 30 minutes. They leave certain things for me to help with when I get home. Just got an email from the 5th graders teachers stating starting 4/20 they are going to deduct points for latenessChat Icon So I now have to find out what they consider late.

I kind of like Google Classroom - I like that the teachers are there giving feedback. Only DS 1 (4th grade) uses it. DS 2 (2nd grade) gets a huge amount of assignments and we have to help him through it - we can email the teacher but, they only have to respond during their office hours.

ETA - Both kids are doing "gym" - basically daily physical activity, not following the assignments. DS 1 has done music and art because a lot of his assignments are 2 day assignments he finishes in 1 day so he needs to do something while DS 2 does his work each day.

I flipping hate flip grid. It took 5 devices to work. It is such a PIA. I have to help my daughter make them. She does not like being taped and it is so hard to get her to want to do them. Also my son's chorus teacher can suck a pickle. I cannot stand this woman.

Google classroom is going to be the bane of my existence

I like the google classroom platform itself but it is very hard for some learners. Reading comprehension is hard because my daughter needs to flip through tabs to get to the questions and then to look up the answers. We ended up printing out alot to make it easier but it takes longer. Math is going well because her teacher is doing video lessons. It is hard. I already told them that specials will be done when we have time. My younger one, has severe learning disabilities and I find everything in google classroom is useless for her. I told her teacher w are focusing on reading and spelling and that is that. No child is going to penalized for what work they do while we are home, especially not elementary students. I think it gets much harder for the poor High School students.

I can rarely get Flipgrid to work and it's all so disorganized.
I hate it.

I loathe it. We are all learning how to use it, the teacher included. But there is just an endless unorganized stream of stuff. My son is on spring break now until the 14th so we have a reprieve but holy hell there was just an overwhelming amount of work since this all started.

Like she's in second but I go to what does she need to do section and it's like due friday 3rd to 5th graders. so yeah i skip it but wtf... disorganized mess!!!

lol @ suck a pickle! I saw an interesting thread on Twitter, from a professor, who told her son's teacher he is done w/ 1st grade
https://twitter.com/indyfromspace/status/1247856156963409920

I can see for older students, they should be able to use technlogy & manage their own work ( to some degree) but it is too much for a 1st grader.

They should give work, b/c some kids need the structure or need something to keep busy, but only the bare minimum should be required.

she is in fifth, so I don’t really have an excuse for not having her do the work. Flip grid is supposed to be stupid easy, but for some reason I can’t explain it just would not work. I had to instal and uninstal stuff so many times. I finally have it under control, but the first time we got audio only, then video only, then nothing, then it was recording but so low you really could not hear it, it was just a complete PIA. It works better now, but I don’t like it because you need to re record so many times to get a decent video. The chorus teacher is just giving PIA busy work for a seventh grade student. It takes an hour to sing back and forth for her required work. I am sorry, I understand she needs to justify herself but it is just too much work when she normally meets much less than she has them meeting now. So it is just busy work and when everyone has conference calls and video calls being made to sing at the same time as all the other calls is just not okay for everyone else.

Google classroom is going to be the bane of my existence

I think you need to reach out to the teachers and explain that the workload is too much.

I teach HS and they tell us we are suppose to give 2.5 hours of work per week per class. That is 20 hours of work a week. I am giving ~60 minutes of work for the average student assuming they are watching all of the videos I post (which I doubt). Some of my students are probably finishing my work in 30 minutes, while it may take others 2 hours. From a planning standpoint, it is hard to know how long activities will take students outside of the school setting. I have some students who move through things so quickly and others who take forever. I am actually offering modified work for any student who feels overwhelmed by their current workload.

My son in K gets probably 45-60 minutes of assigned work a day. We then try to do things like practice sight words for a little bit each day.

Re: Google classroom is going to be the bane of my existence

I actually like Google classroom.

My 6th grader uses it and my 2nd grader. My 2nd graders teacher is so organized and i love how everything is in the same starting place.

But i didn't elect to have the assignments emailed to me. Maybe unselect that option.

My Kindergartner's teacher uses her school page, flip grid, class dojo and 1 more. It is way too scattered and all over the place in my opinion.

My K has about 2-3 hours a day.
My 2nd grader has 4 1/2 hours a day.
My 6th grader has 5 1/2 hours a day.

I've said this from the beginning that we should consider this vacation time and have the kids in school during the summer. However, I don't think there is any way that teachers nor the teacher's union would agree to this.

Our primary schools don’t have a/c either. I went for a makeup kindergarten registration in July and almost passed out after 10 minutes. No way can kids sit in there every day.

Google Classroom question- is there an easier way to see where the teacher left feedback on an assignment turned in?
The notification comes on the phone (from the app) and if we are not fast enough to read where the comment was posted, when you get on the laptop you are searching and searching for the comment. There has to be a step we are missing

If you go back into the assignment, you should see the private comments made by the teacher on the right of the screen.
