Google search from 2001

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this cool?

The World Wide Web and the world have both changed a lot since 2001. Searching Google's 2001 index illustrates both points in what we think is a pretty entertaining way. If you searched on "Michael Phelps" in 2001 for instance, you were probably looking for the scientist, not the swimmer, "ipod" didn't refer to a music player, and "youtube" didn't refer to much of anything.

Since this is for Google's 10th birthday, why are you showing us 2001 and not 1998?

Well, for various technical reasons that are too boring to go into, earlier versions of our index aren't readily accessible. But we did still want to offer users a chance to search an older index as a way of looking back at web history, and the January 2001 index is the best we can do. We hope you enjoy it.

So what exactly happens when I do a 2001 search using this cool interface?

We've set up this search page to return many of the webpages from our 2001 index as results. When you click on a webpage result, you get taken to today's live version of the website. When you click on the link to "View old version on the Internet Archive," you are taken to the earliest 2001 copy of that webpage on the Internet Archive so you can see what the full webpage used to look like.

Can I view the old versions of the web pages that come up in the search results?

Yes, you can. We link to the Internet Archive's cache in our search results, so you can see what the pages used to look like. The date of the cached copy might not match up with the date of the search result, but both are from 2001.

Why can't I find certain web pages that I know used to exist?

If there has ever been a confirmed request to remove a given web page, we've removed it from the 2001 index. And if a site blocks google.com in its robots.txt file today, or did when this index was created in 2001, it won't show up in the 2001 results either.

Is this exactly like Google was in 2001?

No. It's an approximation, but a pretty good one. The results you see here are indeed taken from our January 2001 index, but as noted above, we've removed a fair number of results.

What if I find a 2001 result that I think should be removed?

If you clicked on the link to today's version of the webpage, please contact the website owner directly to take down the bad content. If you clicked on the link to the Internet Archive's version, you can contact the Internet Archive. If you think the search result should be removed from our Google 2001 search index due to inappropriate content or sensitive information, please let us know.

How long will this service be available?

One month. It's kind of lame to be celebrating a mid-September birthday in late October, don't you think?

Will ads be displayed as part of the search results?

No. We're not displaying ads for Google's 2001 search results as it's meant to be a lighthearted way to celebrate Google's 10th birthday.

What is interesting though if you google Osama bin Laden from that year you can find a bunch of sites theorizing that he's a threat to the US and may try something.
