GOP Health Care Plan would reduce insured numbers by 24 million, CBO projects

House Republicans’ proposal to rewrite federal health-care law would more than reverse the gains the Affordable Care Act has made in the number of Americans with health insurance, while curbing the federal deficit, according to a widely anticipated forecast by congressional analysts.

The analysis, released late Monday afternoon by the Congressional Budget Office, predicts that 24 million fewer people would have coverage a decade from now than if the Affordable Care Act remains intact, nearly doubling the share of Americans who are uninsured from 10 percent to 19 percent. The office projects the number of uninsured people would jump 14 million after the first year

But the GOP legislation, which has been speeding through House committees since it was introduced a week ago, would lower the deficit by $337 billion during that time, primarily by lessening spending on Medicaid and government aid for people buying health plans on their own.

The report predicted that premiums would be 15 percent to 20 percent higher in the first year compared with those under the Affordable Care Act but 10 percent lower on average after 2026. By and large, older Americans would pay “substantially” more and younger Americans less.

Great plan... of course it will cost less, if 24 million less people have insurance...

THIS is the plan that the GOP has come up with after 7 years of trying to replace the ACA with "something better"? Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm waiting for the Trump Insurance Company to form, so that he can make more money off of the government.

Well, his target audience is the affluent and corporations, so this plan is definitely "something better" for them. Chat Icon

Yeah, bc those poor people were only insured bc or horrible government was forcing them to buy it. They'll be so relieved when that mandate is gone and they can go back to being happily uninsured.

Not really seeing the huge benefit of what the GOP is offering except for getting rid of the mandate/penalty. I find it ridiculous that those 65 and older will have higher rates considering that's usually when their incomes start to decrease.

Even getting rid of the mandate doesn't make seems to me. It at least encouraged younger, healthier people to get insured and at least the penalty went into the system to help fund everything. Now a lapse in coverage means you are charged 30% more for a full year and that money goes right to insurance companies. How does that help anyone other than insurance companies?

The 30% penalty makes no sense to me either- I thought the GOP didn't like the idea of a penalty? But it's still there, and now benefiting the ins cos.

And Obamacare currently insures 20 million, I think? So an additional 4 million will lose coverage? I find this very confusing.

The number of uninsured would shoot up next year by 14 million, the budget office said. Most of the increase in 2018 would result from people choosing not to buy insurance after tax penalties for those without coverage are repealed, but in later years, the office said, the number of uninsured would rise further because of changes in Medicaid, the health program for low-income people.

“Some states would discontinue their expansion of eligibility” for Medicaid, and federal spending per beneficiary would be capped, the report noted.
...

Many states would have their Medicaid funds cut, so they wouldn't be able to cover as many people, so the lowest income groups would be affected, and lose their Medicaid coverage, or not be eligible by 2026. By 2026, the CBO is estimating that over 50 million Americans will be uninsured.

...
While the deficit would be lower, the legislation also would reduce federal revenue by $592 billion by 2026 by repealing several taxes that the Affordable Care Act created to help pay for more people to get insurance — notably taxes on high-income Americans, hospitals and health insurers.

Trump promised insurance for all and from what's coming out his plan won't provide insurance to all. I really wish they would stop talking how bad Obamacare is and how much better their plan is even though it's not achieving what Trump promised. The idiot in office needs to stop opening his mouth.
