Got a Yorkie puppy...

...yesterday. He's only 8 weeks and we're just realizing how clueless we are about puppies. Are there any good sites, or blogs that anyone would recommend?

Also, not sure if it's normal, but he does not bark...at all. He whipers very softyly at night, but that's all. I know it's a wierd thing to be concerned about, but I grew up with a yorkie and it was the yappiest thing.

Also, can anyone recommend a good vet in the Huntington area?

Congratulations on your new additionChat Icon

The first few weeks are the hardest so hang in there!

Each dog is different so not barking may just be your pup's personality. There are many breed specific books so you may want to check one out at your bookstore. I recommend getting a trainer. We used Bark Busters, a national dog training company, which is a little costly, but well worth it. You can go to Petco and PetSmart for cheaper classes. I do not know a vet in Huntington but I am sure someone else will post one.

Good luckChat Icon Post pics!

Re: Got a Yorkie puppy...

Congratulations! We also have a 8 week old yorkie puppy that we've had for 1 week now!

Our puppy is the same way - she doesn't really bark either, but has a loud whine and wimper.

Make sure you get a lot of chew toys for the yorkie. Ours has already chewed her way through two green nylabones. She loves sqeeky toys, and it keeps her entertained for an hour, and she loves chewing on kong to get the treat out.

We also got liver treats for her - everytime she does a poop outside, she gets a treat. Everytime she gets put in the crate, she gets a treat. Same for when we bathe her, put on Frontline, comb her, brush her teeth, etc.

I got out books from the local library on yorkies to read up on before we got our puppy. Try that route and if you want any help along the way, feel free to fm me!Chat Icon

Congratulations! They told us not to take it outside because it doesn't have all of it's shots yet. Thanks for your advice.

Buying a book was a good idea, but when we went to the place, we were not planning on coming home with one...until we saw himChat Icon

Also, they told us not to bathe him yet. When did you first give yours a bath?

Congrats! Dogs don't always bark right away. It took Katie a while. But boy did she whine.

Our vet said the same thing about the walks, but we take her outside to use the bathroom to train her. We keep her in the yard to sniff ehr away around. She has an area she'll pee in and area she'll do #2 in. We've also shown her the driveway and the front yard so she knows what space she does have.

We bathed her twice already b/c she had two messy accidents in the crate during the night and she had it all over her. We purchased a bathmat for the kitchen sink and a sensitive soap with baking soda in it and she hates gettings wet, but we want her to learn that it's not a punishment, but something positive.

We take our dog back to the vet this Saturday for her next shots.

Congratulations!!

I've always found that the pet owners on here are a GREAT resource. Never hesitate to ask here no matter how ridiculous it may seems... collectively, we've been thru it all.

Cooper didn't really start barking until her was about 1 and a half... even now he's not much of a barker. I don't think it's anything to be worried about, but if you are, head to the vet.

West Hills Animal Hosp. in Huntington is GREAT. We used to take Cooper there and we were so pleased with the staff and the service... we only stopped going because it was kind of a hike for us but we have boarded him there recently.

Thanks everyone. We actually brought him to the vet today. He is healthy. Of course when I mentioned the barking thing, she laughed at me...but I've read all this crazy stuff about debarking...

Anyway, thanks again.
