Got an oil delivery today
and my whole basement and first floor reek of oil! My house smells like a gas station. This has never happened before. Should I panic? Has this happened to anyone before?

I'd call your oil co. ASAP! There may be a leak somewhere that you can't see!

Re: Got an oil delivery today
I called but of course they are closed. They have an emergency number for burner service. I guess I'll have to wait and call in the morning. I checked on and around the tank, and outside where they fill from and I didn't see anything leaking but the smell is unbearable!

Re: Got an oil delivery today
The oil man may have overfilled the tank or the tank may be rusting from the inside out and oil is soaking thru the rusted steel making for a nasty air freshner...

Re: Got an oil delivery today
I'd definitely call the emergency number. This happened once at my parents' house (when they were on vacation) & it reeked of oil and was running down the driveway...apparently he wasn't paying attention & overfilled it.

Re: Got an oil delivery today
OMG.........call the emergency number ASAP...or even your local fire department!!!!!!!!!! I can't stress this enough. I had an oil leak (right after an oil delivery- the line cracked) in my basement. We had every Nassau county fire department here, along with Petro (oil company), police, ambulances and even Haz-Mat! My little guy was only 3 months old at the time! I had to bring both ,y sons to the doctor to check their lungs.
The result of the leak- $8,000 worth of damages to my basement. Had to rip out the walls because the oil was seeping up the sheet rock. Also had to live by my parents for 2 weeks - kill me now. AND...this was a MINOR leak and was caught IMMEDIATELY!!!
CALL now and good luck!

Re: Got an oil delivery today
This happens to us sometimes abd it has been because they overfill the tanks - but for us the smell has been concentrated near the front door because that is where the fill pipe is.
If it's strong in the basement near the tanks you may want to check for staining on or below the tanks and see if they are ready to be replaced.
We just had our tanks replaced and it really wasn't very expensive.
This site had info on oil tanks

Re: Got an oil delivery today
Well I called this morning and the lady was like OMG he must have overfilled it I'll have to send one of the guys over right away blah blah blah. That was 3 hours ago ans she still hasn't called me back. There is some oil on the of the tank where it was overfilled and it dripped on to the floor. Luckily it's concrete and the wall is far enough away from the tank that there is no damage but OMG the smell will not go away. I don't know if I should put sand down there or something? Baking soda? I have a pounding headache from the smell. Thanks everyone for your in put. I'll keep you posted.

Re: Got an oil delivery today
Put some laundry detergent or dish detergent on it and lightly brush it in then follow up with bleach on the concrete. The enzymes in the soap will help dissolve the oil. Clean it well because the oil will soak into the concrete and smell for a real long time.

Re: Got an oil delivery today
Well the delivery guy called me back and said he must have overfilled because my vent alarm doesn't work. So I need to have that fixed but apparently it's not covered by my contract. My friend works at Blackman Plumbing and Heating and he said he can get me the part and fix it for next to nothing. The guy said he would come over and clean it but I'm not at home, I had to work today so he told me to clean the ground with soap and water using a scrub brush and then put kitty litter down (ick). Then he said to wash the top of the tank with soap and water and toss the rags in the trash afterward. I'm glad it's not a major issue but what a scare and the smell is so bad. thanks everyone for your input! I really appreciate it!

This used to happen in our old house (we now have gas) We could always tell right away when we got a delivery. It would subside within a few hours generally though. We never had any issues with our oil tank or anything.
ditto
After we get a delivery there is a oil odor to the air on the first floor. It goes away in about 20 minutes.
We have no problems with our tank.
