Got our new puppy!

We got our new puppy today, he is adorable and we love him already. I have done some searches on crate training and we are going to put him in his crate tonight (i am dreading it!) and we are trying to take him out frequently but he already pooped on the rug once and peed three times! my husband was playing with him and it seems everytime he gets excited he pees-which i can understand he is a baby after all. the weather hasnt helped the situation b/c it was hard to bring him out when it is thundering and lightning out! any words of wisdom, advice anything??? thanks!

Re: Got our new puppy!

Never yell at him. Only say "NO" with a firm voice when you catch him in the act. He doesn't understand why you are saying NO if he isn't doing anything. With my dog If he started to pee on the rug I would firmly say NO and then pic him and put him outside mid pee Chat Icon Hey it worked.

They also sell spray that makes the dog smell where they are supposed to go.

And when the dog goes outside. Make sure you do lots and LOTS of praise. I would make a big deal saying good boy yeah And always had treats in my pocket!

Great advice!!
Dogs are very quick to learn right from wrong.
What type of dog did you get?
Good luck.

Re: Got our new puppy!

Congratulations on the new addition to your family!!! Can I ask where you got him?? DH and I have been to NSAL 2x's this week to look and there have been virtually no puppies. DH goes back into work tonight and works all weekend so we were hoping to get puppy ASAP. Can you recommend any place?? Thanks so much!!

No matter what - if he cries, you need to leave them in the crate. Make sure they have water and a chew toy or two in the crate to keep them company.

Also, try and buy a puppy pal. I bought one for our puppy at Target. You heat it up in the micro and it acts like there is another warm body in the crate for them to sleep next to. We only use it at night.

Our puppy wakes at 4am, we take her out and she'll pee. She'll wake at 5am and go #2, and then she's up for the next 3 hours where she'll play, rest, eat her food and go outside for a few times to pee and then one final #2 before she goes back in the crate while we leave for work. She does have a few accidents on the floor when she gets excited with a toy, but we keep her gated in the kitchen, so she does it on tile floor.

I come home at lunch to feed her a little bit and to let her out, and she'll do both numbers, and then she goes back into the crate with a treat.

Always treat them for going into the crate so they know it's a positive thing and not punishment.

My husband lets her out when he gets home from the office and plays with her and she's fed when I get home around 5:30pm.

Don't hesitate to fm with any questions. We're still learning as we're going!

Sounds like good advice, but one question, I was told that i shouldnt put anything in the crate in terms of food or water? that it would create a problem with the pottying situation? this is all so overwhelming-but he is adorable and we love him!

It is much too hot to leave a dog for hours without anything for them to drink right now. We got one of those water bottles that attached to the outside and the puppy just has to lick the bottom to get some water on their tongue.

Don't put food, though.

That makes sense-we are actually with him all day at this point b/c we are off for the summer (we are both teachers) but it is good to know for in the future and when we start leaving him for a while to get used to us being away. Thanks!

One way to help him learn where he should do his business since you're home with him.

When you see him sniffing - immediately take him outside. Even if he just goes a little bit, congratulate him, rub his ears, tummy, etc. He'll catch on that you mean to have him outside to do his business and not on the carpet or tile floor inside.

Yeah hopefully as we get more used to each other we will be able to read him better-right now we arent picking up on any signs, except when we play with him and rile him up he always goes right after but we dont have enough time to get him outside! we live in a two family house upstairs, so we ahve to get him all the way downstairs and on his leash! we tried to play with him outside to rile him up and then get him to go and he wants no part in playing when we are out there, he just wants to eat the grass and leaves!

I think that is in every puppy's nature is to eat grass and leaves. Our puppy loves it as well! And then we have to open her mouth out to get whatever she started eating out of her mouth and she hates it.

There is a spray the ladies on this board have suggested - I forget the name, though, that you can spray outside to show the dog where you want them to go to the bathroom. That may be an idea to help your dog along.

Not sure how big you puppy is, but when we start to see her piddle in the kitchen, we pick her up and take her outside and once on the grass we put her down and she'll finish her business.

Re: Got our new puppy!

Happy pee is common in puppies, and since it is a poodle mix, it may take longer to go away. Sometimes is lingers longer in smaller dogs.

Buy some Nature's Miracle (found at almost every pet store) to get the smell out of the rug. If the dog smells the urine in the rug they will continue to go there.
Good luck.

Re: Got our new puppy!

Gus, our yellow lab, was horrid to potty train.....we huing jingle bells on the door. Everytime he would go in the house we would say no walk him to the door and jingle the bells, and then let him out..... he learned that ringing the bell ment he went out and caught on rather quick. In the Company of Dogs sells these. It's a dog catalog and you can check it on the internet too. Gus also did well with rewards. He would get a very small treat/biscut when he pooed outside and after awhile they became less freq until he would go and not expect a treat. Just be pt and remember that every dog is VERY different

Thanks everyone! I am proud to say that Miles has not peed in the house since last night- he went out two times during the night to go. He did poop in the house, he hasn't gotten that far yet. I think he is getting it, we are using the crate more, but making sure to take him out and give him plenty of excercise, it seems to be helping him b/c he wont go in his crate. we are so proud of him! he is getting it slowly but surely just like everyone said!
