Re: gps device - recomendations
I gave my DH a Garmin for this birthday in Jan. I dont have the model # but I got it from Amazon.com. It was not the most expensive one & it got great reviews. It looks like this one.Garmin
ETA - I should have gotten the traffic ready one like this one.

We have the Garmin C330. Very basic model and we love it. We don't need all the "frills" just some thing to tell us how to get from point A to point B.

Re: gps device - recomendations
What features are important to you? Do you want the GPS to tell you the name of the streets (turn right in 500 feet on Main Street), or is "turn right in 500 feet" enough? Do you want traffic updates, so you know where traffic jams are, and what is causing them? Bluetooth connectivity so you can use your bluetooth phone with it as a speakerphone? Nearby restaurants, gas stations, etc?
These choices make your decisions much different, as far as which models to choose from.

We have this one too and we love it. It was really helpful when we were on vacation, as it helped us find restaurants and stuff. It was about $300-$350 at Best Buy. The salesman there said that the traffic info offered by some doesn't really work that well yet. He said that in order for it to work, people in the traffic have to have the GPS and be transmitting, otherwise the system can't "read" where the cars are. He said that eventually as more people get the devices this feature will work better.
ETA: I like that it comes with a USB cable that you can plug in to get streets and stuff updated (as they are building more).

Thanks Ladies I want to be able to use a touch keypad on the screen to input the information and for the device to tell what is happening. I am not to concerned about the traffic updates as of yet. I like it to be able to tell us where attractions and things are.

Your best bet is any of the Garmin models... I've tried Tom Toms, Magellans, and Lowrance.. I hated all of them. I have a Nuvi 660 and I LOVE it.

Ours is very similar to this one except two noticeable features.
It is a lot skinnier, but doesn't lose the size of the screen. The big decision maker for me was that I am able to click on the screen while DH is driving and drag the map around to find other things. You can't do that with the C330. I'm also not sure if the C330 has an anti glare screen, which when in the car is helpful. My battery life is lower than theirs because it is tinier, but at 5 hours, it's still good, I'm not going to be walking with it that much anyway.
